There's a schrader valve (looks like a bike tire valve) on the fuel rail that sits on the fuel injectors. You connect the fuel pressure gauge to that schrader valve.

I'm not so sure that my 2004 has a schrader valve. I'm thinking I have to put a T along the fuel line. I'm not sure however. I just bought this truck and really have zero idea of where things are. Prior truck was a 94 and I had no problem finding my way around that engine.

I have the P0316 now as well on my 2003 5.4 Expy. Also have a P0307 code. New plugs last year at 100k by the dealer, that cylinder still has the original coil on it though.
Would the P0316 cause a specific (or any, or random) P0307 cylinder issue?
For the $25 or so, my first step will be to change out the CKP, but just looking ahead here.
You don't really have to take the A/C compressor off do you????

I bought an autoxray scanner the other day to check out fuel preasure at the rail when I have the key in the acc/on possition. I only get about 10 psi and it falls fast suppose to be around 45. I'm thinking I have an injector that is not allowing a seal. You may want to check that out. Im curious to see what happens when you replace your CAP. I've read in several other places that this doesnt fix the problem but please keep me posted on your results. You shouldnt have to take out the compressor.

OK, here's my results, troubleshooting forums are no good if people never post up results!!

First off, the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) cannot, I repeat, cannot be removed on a 2003 Expy 4x4 with 5.4 without removing the A/C compressor. You can loosen it and back it out half way, but it does not clear the compressor and can not be removed (unless you break it in half of course).

Second, I was lucky in that it was the #7 coil that had gone bad. Swapped with a Accel replacement from Advanced, I need to go ahead and get the rest swapped out as this is now my 3rd new coil in the last 2 years.
I hate the fact I had to go buy a 7mm box wrench for $7 to get it done last night (hey Ford, I bet a normal 8mm head would have fit just fine there....)

So it appears the P0307 caused the P0316.

Is your truck hard to start when engine is cold? When I say hard I mean it takes 2 or 3 cranks to get it going but once its going its solid. Mine does this and I think that is why I get the 316 its missing.

*****UPDATE*****

My truck has always had a rough time starting when the engine sat for awhile. I also got the codes P0316 and P0301. Fuel pressure on the rail was alway solid when running but would go to 0 psi when engine is stopped. The other day my truck died on me and I could tell there was no fuel going to the engine, I knew it was a fuel pump. I replaced it and all my problems have be solved. Its been about 2 weeks. I hope this helps someone.
