All is back together with new exhaust gaskets. No more exhaust leak.
The major tick was coming from a broken spark plug (2). The steel and ceramic had seperated.
All is well again. Its time for a beer!
I have an 88 f150 with the 4.9 and within the last week it has developed a rather loud valve train tick. And upon startup, chokes and dies. I suspected a loose rocker, but when I pulled the valve cover, all appears to be tight. The only thing I noticed was an appearence of burned oil caked on #6 intake and exhaust rocker.
My question is can I replace just that cylinders lifters or do I need to change them all?
Would I also need to change the push rods with new lifters?
What is the best way to adjust the valve lash after installing the new lifters?
ETA: I ran the motor to see if the rockers were getting oil and they are. There was also no audible tick with the upper intake and valve cover removed.
Any Ideas?

Reason: got it done
It has an exhaust leak from the donut gasket. It has had the leak since I got the truck.
The engine tick is much worse
ETA: Also with the new ticking comes engine dying after start up. It starts, sputters and dies. Once I get it running, it seems to run pretty good, aside from the loud tick
Exhaust leak? Try replacing the exhaust to manifold gasket, and see what you get. Make sure you torque the manifold to the proper ft. lbs., and sequence.
It definitely could be a lifter, but an exhaust leak can sound like a lot of different mechanical problems. Plus, an exhaust leak can get worse over time.
If you know you have an exhaust leak, tackle that first. That way, you can know for sure if you have other problems when it's done.
I've not had a lifter problem but several times have had the donut leak problem and that was the source of the "ticking". If the gasket is not holding for very long then suspect a plugged/dirty cat converter as they can cause enough back pressure to blow the donut.
I also suspect exhaust. The egr tube was loose upon upper intake removal. I have been idle on the fix due to a death in the family, but monday will be go time.
Is the egr system necessary on this motor or can I delete the system?
