I own a '94 f150 xl w/ 4.9l, 5 spd manual. Everything on it is stock except the radio. I am looking to increase the payload capabilities of my work truck. I cleared 11,000 lbs according to the scales of the scrap yard and I'm not complaining. I would simply like some input on a starting point. Should I upgrade the transmission, the suspension, or the rear axel?
My truck weighs around 4500 lbs plus a 2000 lbs trailer and the rest was scrap. The trailer alone exceed the GVWR. All things considered, the truck performed decent enough. I hadn't even considered an air ride package, thank you for the info. I was planing to switch leaf springs with a 3/4 ton.
Aren't most 9th gen parts interchangeable? Cause I know a bunch of fellas with broke trucks, they also happen to be really lazy. Is it possible to change out the wimpy 5 spd it came with to something with a granny gear? Swipe the rear end from a f250 with a blown engine?
I pulled 11k once, even then it was more like driving a boat opposed to a truck. Other than that, the most stress she gets would be towing other trucks.

When towing and hauling you are really limited by the weakest link in your truck. I don't know what your situation is but a F250 would be a better way to go... After buying Thumper (see sig) 4-6 years ago I simply won't buy another 1/2 ton...
To even try to catch up with a F250 you'll need 3/4-1ton rear springs (with overload springs if you can find them),8 lug sterling 10.25 rear end (full float preferable), ZF-s542 (or s547) transmission (from behind a 300-302 or 351w), 11in clutch... and even then your payload capability might be 3/4's of what the f250's payload is.
Oh and let's not forget you'll need to change the front up to 8lug and that's if you don't have 4x4, which creates a bigger headache... And don't forget you can rig your truck to carry more but you'll also need to stop it so upgraded breaks are always a good option for 11K loads...
