Mini-Spool.....Discussion please

<div class="seocart_Breadcrumbs">FORD 10.50, FORD 7.5, FORD 8, FORD 8.8, FORD 9, FORD 9.75, FORD AOD SLIP YOKE, FORD DISC BRAKE KIT - Ford 8.8 - MINI SPOOL - DEW MS88-31</div>

Seems economical for me...I'm not a off roader...Just sick and tired of sitting and spinning in place with the petty 3.08 Open differential I have now....

What are some pro's/cons?

I already know turning is a biggie....And also, is my MPG's gonna be affected severely?

I hardly ever technically have to park in a parking lot...Except to go to a couple large chain stores...And I am friggin sick and tired of losing traction in mud, and if I have to pull out, or make sudden movements, the lil one wheel wonder seems to break traction a mite easy for my liking...If I don't like it, I can simply remove it...

A better alternative than the $300-600 units or welding the gears up...

You can give it a try , if your axles are worn any i would put some good alloy axles in it , plus some type of traction bars.....

The truck will not turn very well at all. The inner wheel will chirp or try and drag everytime you take a 90 corner on the street....because the diff is not letting it turn less than the outer wheel. Why not just get a locking diff? 300-400 gets you a lock diff with ability to drive on the street? A decent spool is going to cost half that.

advantages- full time posi

disadvantages- worn tires, broken axles, fast wear in axle on street, possible loss of control. Has a bad tendency to make the ends swap.

general consesus is a spool does not belong on the street.. either a locker or a limated slip only if you want both tires to spin

I agree with both of these guys. You're not going to like it on the street. Rather than spend the money on it only to take it back out, I'd save up a little more and get a locker or LSD.

BAD idea for a street driven truck. You turn all the time, anywhere you go. You will eat tires up, it will ruin your milage because even around gradual turns you will be having to scrub tire, and it will cause the engine to work more. Get a limited slip and do it right the first time.

Like everyone else said,......you won't like it on the street.

For what that costs, you can pick up a good used Ford Trac-Lok differential.

FWIW,....If you look around, you can find a complete new Trac-lok for under $200

A spool of any kind is bad news on a street driven vehicle. My advice is go to the scrapyard and find a 3.55LS axle(code H5) and restack the clutch packs before swapping it in, this is by far the most common ratio available so it shouldn't be hard to find. You think your truck pulls well now.. wait till you see what it can do with the right gearing in the axle. And the clutch pack restack I mentioned transforms this diff into a soft locker.. smooth on the street when you're just cruising around but the second you lean into it you have both sides locked together.

You can get a powertrax lock rite or no slip for 350-400, you can install them in the driveway in a couple hours. Real good off road and ok on the street.

How much are the clutch packs? And is there any spefic type of trucks I should look for? 3/4 ton, etc? Just so I don't go opening doors and crawling under strangers' trucks...

Because 3.55 is EXACTLY what I wanted...And I agree....a LS diff would be awesome...

.At least I didn't go ***** out redneck on that differential an grab the welder...

The clutch pack rebuild kits are available for as little as $50, you will need that and a few disks from the original to make the diff perform as it should. The axle you want is another 8.8 from an F150.. it's a direct bolt in.
