'66 Bronco brake shoe problem

I purchased replacement rear brake shoes for my 1966 Bronco the other day from O'Reilly's. They appear as originals in every respect EXCEPT, the frames are made of slightly thicker steel than the originals. This is a problem because the "gaps" in the end of the star adjusters cannot fit over the brakes.

Has anyone else ever run into this problem? I am thinking I may need to carefully grind them until they are thin enough for the adjuster to slip over. Ideas??

Are you replacing the adjusters and springs too? I haven't ran into this problem, but I always replace everything else while I'm in there. Might take a shoe back with you to the store and check with new adjuster.

I never have replaced an adjuster before, but it is a reasonable idea I guess. Thanks.

1948/52 F1, 1953/67 F100 & 1966/75 Bronco use the same brake shoes.

11" x 2" front / 11" x 1 3/4" rear.

Back then there was never a problem with brake shoes, because when new shoes were purchased, the lining could be sized to the drums.

Lotsa luck finding a brake shoe sizer today.

The two ends of the self adjusters are the same width regardless of whether the brake shoes are 11 x 2, 11 x 3, 11 x 1 3/4 or 11 x 2 1/4.

The problem lies with the autoparts store made in China brake shoes, not with the adjusters.

You are right about that. Rather than change adjusters out, I opted to carefully "narrow" the brake with a Dremel and grindstone until the adjusters would fit. Seems to have worked on the rears. I haven't got to the fronts yet to see if I have the same issue. Thanks for the input Bill.
