Today I torn down my newly acquired '94 351w. I plan on dropping this in my '95 F150 4x4 that is currently running a gutless 302. The 351 has approx. 100k so a rebuild is in order. To my surprise after careful inspection the cylinders are in excellent shape with factory cross hatching fully visible so I am just opting for re-honing, rings, mains and seals on the lower end. I what to replace the cam to get more hp & torque. I will also be adding headers, an air intake system, reusing my MAF sensor from my 302, and a valve job.
Does anyone have any cam recommendations that won't screw up the EFI?
What about the Crane Powermax 444215? or the Comp Extreme 4x4 cams?
Quick reply.....
Your new engine block is roller compatible, I would use a Extreme energy roller cam( I would go small, to make loads of torque) in it, with roller lifters(will also need shorter pushrods)......
If your truck IS a mass air sensor equipped FI system, you will need a larger MAS to make any power
I would get a set of Roush 180 heads(if mass air equipped), already equipped with bigger springs, which are needed for any larger cam you plan to install, have a smaller combustion chamber than stock heads, providing a nice compression boost, better chambers than the stock junkers, and flow alot better than the stock <a href="http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/">351w </a>heads, which are too small for even 302's. Cast Iron construction, EGR compatibility, but downside is that you have to buy stud-mounted roller rocker arms(good plan, anyway), and I would keep your stock 351 intake(<a href="http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/">302 </a>does not fit), or get a performer truck 351 intake.
Bassani makes a set of headers to bolt on to your truck, along with a Y-pipe system that ties into the stock exhaust....
Yes, most of this may be a bit much, but hey, you only live once....
More info available if needed, running short on time......

My '94 <a href="http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/">351w </a>already has factory roller cam and hydrolic roller lifters.

Why do I need to get a larger MAS? Isn't that the purpose of a MAS to detect more air volume and signal the injectors to mix more fuel?

Where can I get Roush 180 heads? whats the cost? can GT40 heads work and are they better then stock <a href="http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/">351w </a>heads?

Are they long headers? available where? are they coated?
Sorry, if any information incomplete, as I was in a hurry.....
If your truck has the MAS, then you should be able to upgrade the cam to something better, and be able to reuse everything else......
Yes, the MAS adapts for changes, but the stock MAS has been proven to be a major Cork in the air flow department, and upgrading to at least a 73-75mm unit should be all the <a href="http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/">351w </a>needs, as Ford has a nasty habit of undersizing MAS's and throttle bodies(Your TB is fine....). I would try Pro-M for a MAS, do a search for their site......
GT40heads work okay, but are ancient technology compared to the new heads on the market......try Summit Racing parts for the Roush 180 heads, and the matching roller rocker arms you will need to use those heads.
The headers that Bassani sells for the truck are a shorty header, direct-fit, along with the Y-pipe that goes into the stock convertor.
A dealer you might contact about the headers would be:
Sacramento Mustang, 1-800-416-8782
You might get scared off due to the price, but their equipment is bulletproof, and you might also follow up with a Cat-Back exhaust system, to take advantage of the improved breathing up front. Usually, these headers are either coated, or stainless steel.
