2 years old VW tdi sell in California about $3000 ABOVE MSRP.
The law will not allow those to be sold new here.
You will really admire the car when Ford fill up will go to $300

If someone were coming to me for advice on a fuel sipper, the VW would not be at the top of my list. It would be on my list for sure.

The 2012 Focus SFE is rated at 40 for thousands less and is built with Ca emissions. My 2010 is getting 40 so the 2012 with it's six speed auto may achieve a little better.

The Fusion Hybrid is a great option and it's a little bigger for about the same money as the VW.

The Escape Hybrid is also a very good choice.

Hyundai has new GDI engines out that seem to do very well with MPG's and performance for many thousands less and awesome warranties to boot.

If the TDI's are that desirable in Ca, then posting the car on Craigs List and offering to deliver the car is still better than hanging onto something that is unwanted.

Good luck Brandon.

Good advice!
And take a look at the torque ratings of the hybrids vs. The TDI. Yes owners do have to keep the TDI longer in order to recoup the additional costs over a gas car in fuel. But the TDI "breaks in" at 60k miles.

That was easy, you talked yourself into keeping it.

How in the world do you hook a goose neck to a VW?

I have learned that fuel economy isn't the most important thing.

I believe in the future fuel economy WILL INDEED be the most important issue when purchasing a vehicle. Unless you're filthy rich.

I have the jetta TDI and my super duty. During the week when my wife lets me drive the car I do, I commute 140 miles round trip. Don't mind driving the super duty, on the highway I can squeeze 19-22 mpg, that's hand figuring and not the lie O meter. I would love to get the new eco-boost, truck and jeep are paid off and I really can't bring myself to another car payment, yet. Good luck Brandon and I would craigslist it, people love the Golf TDI's. stg

I bought a new 2007 XLT Screw. Got it all fixed up with a lot of exterior mods and after a short time thought I needed to have a car that got better fuel mileage so I traded for a 2008 Fusion SEL with all of the options on it. The car was great and got 28-29 MPG but I surely missed my truck. After almost 3 years I traded for my current '10 XLT Screw.

I love trucks and believe that in the future, trucks will always have a place for people who use them--especially for professional reasons--but smaller, more economical cars (and small SUV's) will be much more common as daily drivers. I just spent $100 to fill my van with gas, and am glad that I do have a couple smaller vehicles to drive when I don't need the van. Still, I will keep the van for those times when I do need it. (It's an '02 E150, probably worth only 5-6 grand, and at this point, it's almost "free" to keep in terms of depreciation.) If I had to replace the van today, I would strongly consider the Transit Connect but wish it was a foot or two longer.

Good luck with the VW if you do hold it for the medium or long term. I have always loved the look and feel of German cars and have a '91 BMW 318is (that I've owned since 1994--so it's also depreciation proof) that is great to drive and gets almost 30 mpg.

George
