Once you know your timing is on, and the compression is there. Then you can start checking injector spray patterns.

At a Ford Truck dealer in the mid 70's I would see many injectors with a bad spray pattern or a drip problem. I don't remember checking compression but these didn't have high mileage back then. I do remember keeping all the slack out of the gears to check timing or it would be way off.
