Window Motor or Gears?

Alright, I've searched around for a few hours trying to get some details on my 1989 F150's automatic window's problem... For a few weeks it started to "bump bump bump" and not stop when my window reaches the top of the seal, sounded like the gears were slipping or something... Well today it finally will no longer roll up and falls down a few inches when I'm on the highway.

I know obviously the motor's good because I can hear it running just fine but it seems like the gears are stripped or something, I don't know much about this kind of stuff, more of an engine guy, lol.

But I was wondering if I'm on the right track at thinking it's the gears, and if so, does that mean that I can just take the motor out and put a new gear on it or what? I can't see anything, I even took my speaker out and still couldn't see much and I couldn't find much info on it for around my year. Also noticed it had the holes drilled out already, so I know it's been R&Red or tampered with.

I dont think you can replace just the gears on the door glass. Prolly better to replace the whole motor/regulator.

Mmm, I was afraid of that, was hoping I could be as cheap as possible, but it'd be easier just to replace the motor and junk.

If the motor runs but the windows doesn't move it's most likely the gears on the window regulator. They can be replaced seperately. The window motor is about 6 inches almost directly below the speaker. Three bolts and a power connector and it comes right out.

You can get the gear kits from any parts house. I got a set from Rock Auto for about 20 bucks.

The window regulator is what the motor "hooks into" right? Just being sure.

Typical problem.

That's correct.
DOAZ-62234A24-B (replaced C5AZ-62234A24-A) .. Power Window (P/W) Motor Gear Kit / Available from Ford and a gazillion autoparts stores.

MSRP: $45.12 // FTE sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $32.48.

Applications: 1981/90 F100/350 / 1980/90 Bronco / 1978/90 Bronco-Tailgate P/W motor / 1975/91 Econoline / 1965/90 Passenger Cars (except '65/69 S/W tailgate P/W motor-uses a different kit: C9AZ-62234A24-B).

On newer vehicles, the P/W motor is only available with the regulator, but that is not the case with any of the above applications. The R/L regulators, R/L P/W motors, gear kit could all be bought separately.

Yes. The regulator is the assembly made up of the torque arm and the moon gear looking thing the motor gear moves.

Also, since it sounds like this isn't the first time the gears are being replaced, when you have the door panel off check to make sure the window isn't binding or getting hung up through it's range of motion. If it's sticking somewhere it'll torque the bushings in the gears and break them again.

Usually just the 3 bushings go bad. You can remove the whole window regulator with the motor attached. I don't remember for sure if the regulator is held in by rivets or bolts. The window glass support frame will slide off of the plastic regulator guide.

Prop the window up with a 2x4. Remove the side cover from the window motor
which will expose the large plastic gear. Inside that gear are 3 plastic bushings.

You can purchase the bushings in the Help section display at any Autozone and
at most auto part stores. Shouldn't cost more that a couple of dollars.
Usually the gear does not need replacing.

Here's a picture of what the bushings look like. The gear shown is not the correct gear
but it looks similar.

The P/W gear kit from Ford (DOAZ-62234A24-B) comes with the plastic gear (which is notorious for stripping), the 3 bushings (which are notorious for flattening out-cuz they're rubber) and a tube of grease.

Dunno what the parts store gear kit comes with, cuz I've never bought or seen one.

This can be fixed at basically not cost. Check out my notes on this post. Works like a charm, and will never break again. I have done this to several Ford Trucks with no problems and worked for years. Really easy to fix.

Lil update, everything is closed right now but I got the motor out which was pretty easy and took the gear & cover off and lookie what I found lol...

Damn, what a mess.

Anyway quick question, I swabbed all the junk out, should I spray some brake clean in there to clean it out real good then repack it with grease or not, I'm guessing not but there is a spring where I believe the grease gun would repack at and it's encrusted with goodies lol. Just wondering.
