borg warner 1356 problems

Hey im looking at buying a 89 or 90 bronco custom from my buddy with the 300 inline six with 82,000 miles on it and its a 5 speed manual. Interior is vinyl and perfect and there's just a bit of generic bronco rust on it around the wells and such. But the only issue is that when he was driving it one day it began to make a bit of a grinding noise and then the whole thing started to shudder kinda violently. The cause of it has been narrowed down too the transfer case which is a BW 1356 or hopefully we think that's the cause. Would anybody have any idea what the problem is or if we know what it is? Cus I want an opinion if I should buy it. Thanks

Could be the chain in the transfer case. Could be the rear chunk. Could be the clutch. You'll need to do a bit more trouble shooting. Place the rear axle on jackstands. Make sure the front is chocked. Disconnect the driveline from the back of the transfercase. Turn the driveline by hand, first one direction and then the other. Is the rotation smooth? Next reach over and turn the still connect front driveline. How does that do?

the TC should have a tag on it saying what model it is. make sure the Tcase if full of tranny fluid, if its old then drain and fill it back up. Like said it could be a number of things.

Yea we took the drivetrain off and spun it by hand and it spun nice and freely, we also opened the rear diff and there were no chipped gears or metal shavings. The sound sounded like it was coming from the transfer case but we haven't take it apart to look yet

are you sure its not the ujoints on the driveshafts themselves? with the tranny in neutral do you still hear it with the rig rolling?

Im not sure, we have had the transfer case and the driveshaft off for about a year and the diff cap as well, we snapped off the heads of the 3 bottom bolts on the diff cap

I would say yes if the rig is otherwise in good shape and the motor runs.

motor runs beautifuly, fuel injected 300 inline six with 82k original miles. start her about once a week or so and she starts up faster than my 2003 gmc. i just hope the issue can be solved with a new T case or somthing as simple. i would crack the T case and look inside but i have no idea what the inside is supposed to look like since this will be my first fix and ive never worken on one before. any help?

a replacement wrecking yard case should be easier and far less time consuming. shouldnt pay more then $150 at most in my opinion. also if the current case is electric, this is a great time to get a manual tcase in there.

Oh no she's a manual T case. This rig is a bronco custom, as basic as she gets, not even a tape player

My truck makes the same kind of noise, but only when the hubs are locked or in 4 wheel. We thought it was the t-case, and changed it. Still makes the noise, I looked a little bit harder and found the noise to come from the front end. I haven't taken it apart to find what exactly it is though.

Just make sure you check everything over before you go spend money on a tcase.

Well could the transfer case effect how it drives in 2wd? Cus it has that issue in 2wd and I don't think we ever tried it in 4. But the sound was coming from the T case for sure.

Yes, the transfer case is in play in 2 and 4 wheel drive. Here is link to Steve83's pic of the T-case. The main element connects to the transmission tail housing and has a shaft and planetary gear set that runs through to the output to the rear driveshaft, (2WD) and then there is a chain and shift mechanism over to the gear that drives the front output to the front driveshaft. The image is very detailed. But if you look at it, you can see the interaction that has the transfer case in play in both 2WD and 4WD
