Pretty much, unless you are lucky enough to destroy the chain. Which is highly unlikely before the planetary, oiler, and fork go. Only way to see is to bust it open. By the time you have it opened up and the chain out, you are about 2/3 done with a re-build. That's why it's been said to find a t-case in a yard.
the 1356 is a strong tcase. it has issues when the fluid isnt kept up or if someone has put it into 4wd on dry pavement. this will cause the case to bind up and potentially fail. hard to say which happend here though.
They have been known to lose the chain oiler. And for said oiler to end up chewing the case at it mounting location. That's about it. Other than that, they are quite sturdy.
I'm with you. Web diagnosis only goes so far. He needs to open up the case.
yea im gonna open it soon, hopefully i see some metal shavings or something to let me know that the Tcase is the problem, im buyin it next week for 400, gonna be a good fixer upper
Hey, post some pics of the carnage you find! I lost the oiler, shift fork and 2hi and 4 hi in my t-case when it broke, never had one apart before but took me 30 mins to fix myself.
im not sure if im gonna pop it open yet, i just bought the truck today and i m stoked to start to fix her up, but how do i know if the oiler blew? cus that may be the issue im havin. dont wanna get a new case and have that one blow too.
Having just torn one down, twice, I have a few thoughts. First, I don't think the transfer case has enough mass to make the whole truck shake violently. I would take a serious look at the U-Joints, flange bolts, and transmission/motor mounts first. Secondly, when it comes time to drop it, it's fairly simple. I would suggest pulling the seats and rolling back the floor covering though; You may find it easier to access the upper bolts. When disconecting the TC shift linkage, be careful not to reef too hard on the linkage at the case. If you damage the shaft that the shift plate rides on, you could find yourself stuck in one range or another because the shift plate can move allowing the shift forks to disengage from the plate. There's an excellent write up over on Pirate 4x4 with quite a few pictures ( COMPLETE BW 1356 teardown pics - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board ) This particular bookmark goes to a post mid way down the page, so you'll have to scroll back to the top on your own...Sorry....
thanks alot man, im gonna try and switch the main ouput shafts from the 1990 to the 1989 case, thats gonna help me alot, i just cant find a socket that will fit in the half U joint yoke on the 89, i tried with the same socket i used on the 90 to get the plate yoke off and it got stuck in the yoke.
