First off, I have a 2WD 351w with a 3 on the tree. When I take off from a stop (reverse as well) my truck shakes like Bagdad after an air attack. I can reduce (sometimes stop) the shaking by letting the clutch out (shaking starts) push it in a little (shaking eases) letting it out all the way. I thought this was a part of owning an old truck but now I'm not so sure. Anybody have any idea what this is?
Before I took apart my 75 f150 300 with 3 speed on the column, it had a shake like the one you described. When I took the engine and trans apart, I was expecting to see a wipped out clutch disc. But the disc was mint!!! The throw-out bearing was shot, it would harcly turn. If you take the rubber boot off the bellhousing and get a oiler with a long skinny spout, you can oil the bearing. But be VERY VERY VERY careful not to get oil on the clutch disc.
My experience is that the Long style clutches are prone to shuddering regardless. My '55 shuddered with a Long Style and it quit when I installed the Centerforce Gold 10" clutch.
Could be a worn pilot bushing which lets the input shaft vibrate causing the cluth plate to shake violently. It could also ruin the input shaft bearing in the tranny.
I once had bad chatter in a new engine. I found out that the dowel pins in the block were off; the bore in the bellhousing was .030 low. I fixed it with off set dowel pins. I always check a new engine with a dial indicator in the bellhousing to see if it is concentric with the crankshaft.
I had the same problem with a '79 wreaker I had . When I removed the engine the pilot bushing fell out of the crank .
Obviosly it was not installed correctly but hey the engine was going into a truck with a automatic so I didnt mind
The wreaker would shake violently when you went to take off just as you are describing
My '75 does the same , but the engine was not put in by me , and it is going to come out anyway this summer so I'll investigate it later this year (lol)
