Hi,
As some of you know, there are 3D laser printers available that 'print' parts by building up layers of plastic and the like.
Leno has had one for years ( of course). His cost 15K, and he also has a 3D scanner to go with it. Using these he can duplicate oddball parts directly, or make a mold to fab them out of other materials.
These would seem to be great for making a lot of the little resto parts that are nearly impossible to find. I'm just wondering if anybody offers it as a commercial service. Might be a great niche business.
Quite a few places do that actually. In fact, just in Austin alone there are several local CNC machine shops. However, I haven't researched them closely enough to find out if they do one-off designs for private customers, or if they're strictly moderate-volume manufacturing or commercial prototyping. But yes, this type of thing is widely available commercially.
