My 99 Exp 2WD has developed an aggrevating bucking/shuddering @ 50mph. It was intermittent at first, thought it may have been bad gas at first, but has proggressively occuring more often. Not sure if its engine misfire or tranny issue. No CEL. No codes. Just repaced all coil packs last year- Very annoying especially In traffic (40-50mph range) . I have 165,000 mi on her with no major complaints till now. Anyone else suffering with this issue or have suggestions? All advice welcome
Sounds like you could be have an issue with the TC lock-up in the tranny. It might be worth a trip to a good tranny shop for a diagnosis; before pulling your hair out looking for an engine problem that doesn't exist.
Have the drive shaft u-joints ever been replaced? A failing u-joint will cause some nasty vibrations at highway speeds. Don't know how involved it is on an expy, as i haven't done mine yet. When i looked the rear shaft looked pretty easy to get to, but the front shaft looks like it's gonna be a PITA.
Since the front only spins when you are in 4wd, check the rear shaft joints and replace if they look original. see if that helps
He said his was a 2WD , but if it was a 4WD, the front shaft would spin any time the front wheels are rotating, it just doesn't receive anypower unless the A4WD engages.

The 4.6 uses coil packs (one pack per cylinder) and spark plug wires. Might want to start by ohming out the spark plug wires if they wern't changed with the coil packs.
The 5.4 uses COPs (Coil-On-Plug), one coil per cylinder. Check the spring and boot connecting each coil to its plug, looking for carbon tracking and/or moisture.
thanks buddy- I'm going to recheck those coil packs over the weekend. It feels the same as when I had a coil go bad- but what-ever it is isn't leaving me any faults to read nor setting off the CEL.... course I can get in her tomorrow for work and the CEL light will be on. Appreciate the reply's everyone... btw, to answer your question-

Okay - If you have the 5.4L then you don't have coil packs, you got the COPs. Check the boots and springs carefully, and look for any sign of moisture/coolant in the spark plug wells.
And like Scotty said, "When were the plugs done last?" Also, what brand of plug are you using?
