Ok this is odd, I replaced the tail and parking lights and back up lights in the rear only with led bulbs, since I was alone I checked them with the 4 ways on, and all looked well. today on e road I find that the blinkers do not work? the dash indicator bulbs for the flashers just stay light? like they would if a bulb was out, they do not flash? the bulbs are all working, but do not flash? the 4 ways work fine? I understand that leds are kinda picky about polarity, but these are 1157 leds and should only go in one way right? I will check this out tomorrow, but is there anything else I should check? there is only one flasher unit right? in a 1984 f150 right? just figured I'd ask here first, as I am going to wait until tomorrow since the rain is trying to wash us away!!! Thanks, victor
LEDs draw a lot less current than analog bulbs, and maybe no enough to actuate the flasher.
You might try one of the newer, all-electronic flashers and see if the behavior is better.
There are two flasher units; the one you can see I think is for the directional signals, there's another directly behind it (need to unscrew the panel from the firewall) for the emergency flashers.
I did not know that? a lot has changed since I last fooled around with tis stuff, good to know, always learning...Thanks, I am going to check it out now, as the rain has let up a bit.. I guess all new things require a bit of R&D right? I just picked up a leer fiberglass truck cap from a 1985 to go on my 1984 truck, the guy had it since new, and took it off to move, and because it was so heavy...he never put it back on? I got it for 150.00, cool, now I can take my dogs out! with the hood ornament (swan) the galaxy radio, and the cap, it's almost like I'm back in my large car!!!
Thanks, Kirbyman yes, I have a few of those that came with the bulbs. but they didn't stop the bulbs from flashing on my wife's mustang, the led's made it flash faster? mine don't flash at all? but I will try everything today, thanks, vic
Might check your flasher then. Try a #552 thermal flasher before you look into the LED-specific one. Probably only a couple bucks compared to $10-$20 or more.
Try removing the load equalizers and see if the bulbs flash.
The faster flashing is from a lack of load on the flasher. It "thinks" there is a burned out bulb, so it flashes fast.
Newer flashers have this "feature" included. Older flashers wouldn't flash at all if the load wasn't enough to heat up the trigger enough to trip it.
The Original flasher on these trucks is a thermal type flasher.
The Load or draw on the circut heats up the flashers internal components, when the heat gets hot enough it "breaks" the connection, the flasher cools, it connects again.
This process is repeated over and over. This is what causes the flasher to blink.
When you put in all led lights, you reduced the draw on the circut so much that the flasher can no longer heat up enough to "Break" the connection, or flash.
You need a newer type "Electronic" flasher designed for leds, or to use the resistors.
The reason why the Hazards was still working is there is twice the load 4 bulbs in circut, compared to 2 bulbs with standard turn signals.
You guys are always on the ball!! I put in the resistors and they work great now! ( the extra draw on the 4 ways never occurred to me, DUH!!)
Thanks, for all the help! Now on to those pesky dash lights!!! Thanks to all!!!, vic inch by inch it's a cinch!!!...with your help!
