Pulled the turbo.

I pulled the turbo this week end and pulled it apart to clean the turbine side because of under boost codes popping up. I found the unison ring frozen to the housing not allowing any movement at all. In fact the center part of the housing was so rusted it was pressing on the unison ring and I had to pry it off with a screw driver. But the reason for my post is when I was putting the up pipe back on from the exhaust I broke the clamp trying to get a good seal. So I got a new clamp from the dealer and this time I coated the inside of the clamp with anti sieze and wow what a difference it made on getting it to seal. It was as smooth as butter. I do not know if anyone has tried this before so I just thought I would pass it on.

Im well aware. I recently had the heads lift on my truck, due to the turbo overboosting. Turned out the unison ring was burnt and stuck to the turbo from all the carbon and crud build up. The first time I took the truck for a spin after the turbo was rebuilt, I couldnt believe the difference. I bought it used, so I have no idea how long the turbo had been like that. I know extensive idling is bad, especially on a VGT turbo, so I make sure to give it a good romping every time I take it out.

Hey Mah77 I had this turbo replaced by ford two years ago so it did not have all the carbon build up like the one you show in the pictures. I was sure surprised by the rust though. Looks like a never ending battle to me.

Don't know if you use cetane boost in the fuel but it helps to keep the turbo and egr valve clean and working but to drive it like you stole it once a week helps also

Yea pop I do use a cetane booster on every fill up. The reason for the rust is from sitting to much. I do not drive this truck everyday and only put a thousand miles on it in 3 months. So hence the rust build up. I really do not know how to prevent it unless I drive it more often.

Mine sits too. I got my truck for towing my travel trailer. I have a Ranger as my daily driver, but I do make an effort to take my truck out for a 30 minute drive at least twice a week. I use Diesel Kleen at every fill-up as well. Not sure how much of the issue I had was inherited from the previous owner.
