I'm restoring an old friend (78 F150). I need to change his cab out from a run in with a power pole. Are all the Cabs from '73-'79 the same, as in mounting etc.? I found another truck a '75, but I just want to make sure that everything is gonna bolt up. Thanks in advance.
For mounting the only difference would be if the cab you are swapping would be from a 73-77 F250 4x4 (highboy). The highboys rear cab mounts to the outside of the frame and use different rear holes in the cab, however, there are template holes underneath the cab to except the "inside frame mounts" so very easy to drill out. Otherwise, every other cab from 73-79 will bolt up.
thanks alot guys. Naw its from a 75 2X4. Sweet I'm gonna go get that thing then. Just not looking forward to removing it as I'm pretty sure it weighs a ton. But ole uncle_jessie HAS to have it.

There may be other models that use a different rear cab mount location, when I switched the rusty cab on my 74 F350 2wd cab & chassis, with a cab from a 77 F150 4x4, the rear mounting holes were in a different position, but as 77ford mentioned, there were factory "centerpunch" type indentations in the proper location, so I just had to drill 2 new holes, and bolted it up.
I did a swap on my 78 with a 75 back in december. Mine is a supercab but as far as bolting up they were exactly the same. The biggest difference was in the wiring and the plumbing for the A/C and heating ducts. I used my 78 plumbing and wires in the 75 cab and there were a few places it was pretty snug.
I still havent figured out my heater wiring but since it's summer it's not that big of a deal. Just label everything and you should be fine.
Oh and yes my cab was HEAVY but we used a backhoe to do our lifting. Make for dang sure you have stripped EVERYTHING off your old cab you can, need it or not!!! I tossed a ton of stuff that I quickly regretted and still do. It took me and one other guy a weekend to do the swap and a couple more weekends to get it buttoned back up and ready to drive.
I changed the cab on my 77 hiboy last fall. Used a 79 F150 cab. As mentioned before, the rear cab mounts are on the outside on only hiboy trucks because of the divorced transfer case that is directly below.
I changed alot of other things too. The 79 cab was AC, and I kept the vents in the dash, and made that half of the AC box meet up with my non-AC box to get heat out of my dash vents turned into a REALLY long, but rewarding project. The hole in the firewall was MUCh larger on the AC cab, I cut that part of the firewall out of the other cab. Also the hiboy was incab tank so I had to drill out the spot welds for the bottom mounts, and this cross piece for the top 5 bolts. That sucked, but I think the in cab tank is cool. It will NEVER rust up here where they use tons of salt.
