Dropping the fuel tank

82 f150, 300, 4x4, 4spd

First off, wanna thank everyone for their help with my recent posts. Today I finally got around to dropping the fuel tank. Theres a hole in it somewhere, fuel sloshes out every time I take off from a stop. On top of that, the cross member towards the rear of the tank that supports it is rotted away and collapsed. I took off my driveshaft and my exhaust so I could just drop down everything as one piece. Everything is off, accept for that hose inside the filler neck. I think they call it the fast fill hose or something, just basically the vent hose that allows you to fill as fast as possible.

My question is, wheres the proper place to disconnect this hose, and how?

Attached a picture below of whats left of the cross member, picked up a new one at the junk yard the other day!

Wow, never mind on that question, I feel silly! The tube was just getting caught on the lip of the tank when I was trying to pull it!

Wooo, You may want to pull the bed off the truck and check out the frame! A rotted cross member may only be the "tip of the iceberg"! On my trucks I now prop the bed up to get to the tanks. With help of a 2nd person you can take the bed off(done it a few times now), but 4 people would make it much better.

Ah, yea my bed is a stepside, its shot, I just left it on for now. Im going to rebuild the bed in the future, make it a metal bottom to get rid of that nasty wood. Frame is all pretty solid accept for a spot around each shock mount in the rear. Im gonna hammer out the rivets for the old cross member tomorrow, and get the new one I picked up at the junk yard cleaned, painted and coated before I bolt it in.

I figure I'll clean, paint & coat the frame when I get to the bed. Rebuilt the whole cab awhile ago, was rotted to hell, had a thread on that awhile back. The projects never end!

i had that crossmember rot on on my truck as well. I went to the junkyard and got a replacement. surprisingly the rest of the frame in that area was ok.

Same here! I was surprised to, theres a bit of rot on the driver side where it bolts to but its maybe the size of my thumbnail.
