steering linkage and system clunk

here goes, last question for the day for all ya'll experienced idi guys out there. I have been having a clunking with take off and took the beast in. $400 later I had new ball joints because the originals don't last for 200k I guess. Hit the road for work and, low and behold, It still clunks.

I have a slight bit of steering play and when I grab the lower end of the shaft (by the steering gear) there is a bit of play but not a lot. I do have a slight steering pump leak. But other than that...

well, if I take the steering linkage (between the tierod end) I can rotate it and make a similar clunk....is that normal? If not, what needs to be changed. I greased the tie rod outters and the joint the linkage connects to and the grease was coming out of several places (I'm thinking the boots are shot, are the joints then shot?)

Does your steeing wheel shimmy going down road at around 50? If so then that would be some tierod problems I belive. If you have a buddy have him get in the truck and shake the wheel back and forth. Then you can see what's loose and clunking around
