I think all years through 1991 had floor shifters. From 1992 and up, they went to the column. It also meant that they were only available with automatic transmissions from 1992.
I don't think you want an Aerostar floor shifter for your Mustang; it has the wrong configuration, and the shaft is too long.
The AWD system is not very heavy duty in comparison to the typical 4wd trucks. It uses a dana 28 transfer case and front axle, made just for the Aerostar. The transfer case uses a magnetic clutch to lock the front and rear drive shafts when the computer detects a certain amount of slip at certain speeds. It is intended to provide traction on roads covered by rain or snow, and not so much for off-roading.
Thanks for your knowledge of Aerostars. I wanted the shifter because of the hieght, gives the stang a factory like rat rod look and the Bronco a much prefered floor shifter I can reach. You don't think it could work with a C3 or C6?
I ws just curioud about the AWD system not to take on offroad or anything like that. That means it probably won't hold up to much HP either. On Stangnet or AFM we where talking about using the Aerostars awd system on a fox body. You could probably replace that with a torsen diff(Car Bibles : The Car Transmission Bible page 2 of 2) and with a mildly built v6(SHO/s-c 3.8) or a turbo 2.3, stuff that awd system under a light car like a fox body.
The Aerostar shifter has the 4 click stops for the A4LD transmission. You can probably just lock out the last position, and modify a shift arm on the C6/C3 to make it work. If I were to do through that kind of effort, I may get something really cool, like a B&M Megashift or something like that.
I'm not sure if the Aerostar transfer case will fit a C6/C3, or AOD/T5. So you would need to take the A4LD, which can be strengthened with a proper rebuild, with the TC28. In any case, it's not going to fit under the Fox body without major modifications to the floor pan. There's also almost no room under the front cross member for the front axle. I've done extensive work under both vehicles before, so I've thought about the same modifications as well. You can check out the pictures of the Aerostar work at my picasa web site:

I also just posted pictures of the work I did about 12 years ago on my 87 Mustang. Look for the front suspension modifications; you can see how tight the area under the engine is.
Ive been wanting to build a mild hp awd car. I meant if the shifter would work with either transmission not the t-cASE. Bt on a side note to get the front axle to ft all youd need to do is what gm did with the Equinox.
