Engine road block

So....reaquainting myself with the inner workings of a resto/mod has been an experience. Never had an in-line six so that has been new. Truck.....new. Oh...I've owned truck but not one that I am doing this to. Nice to see that somethings haven't changed like when you buy a kit they forget to remind you of springs, plates, brackets, spacers, cables and.........

This is the case with the engine mods I'm doing.

I bought one of the kits from Jegs....offy intake, Holly carb, Headman header and a few other pieces. They are good folks there, been helpful as they can be but I guess when you buy a kit, you would expect a little "don't forget the fact that none of your stock stuff will work" note.

I do need more help here. I guess it would be nice to help others but I am so upside down on this right now.....I can't help myself sometimes.

Things I need to know......

First off I figured out that the carb doesn't get mounted the way I first had it. Ironically the engine started and ran great but it was back-wards. Never done that before.

Understanding that the carb is transverse mounted.......if anyone has done this out there....what throttle cable and cable bracket have you used? The stock ones are too short of not usable at all.

The spacer to get the carb linkage to work is easy enough but the holes that are now in manifolds for the smog crap weren't there when I did this the last time. Does anyone know the size plug I will need. I didn't notice them before I installed the manifold since if I had.....I would have just taken that to the parts store and had them fit but.......I didn't and I'm not taking the manifold off.

Other than that I also figured out you need to have a heat shield of sorts for the cable that goes from the solenoid to the starter. That made for an interesting issue today and one that I hope to never have again. First time I've ever had the cable arc like that on a header.

It's gonna rain here the next couple days but I would like to get the parts ordered. I will be trying to find a local performance store but from what I have seen so far they are few and far between. I guess what I'm saying is I could use the help once again.

Thanks,

Joe

Is this the kit?
Offenhauser 6019-DPK Offenhauser Dual Port 6-Cylinder Manifold

Crap shoot on the plugs. They are fairly large, Id be willing to bet they are NPT threaded. I would say, unless you can get a concrete size from someone here, just measure the hole with a ruler, go to the hardware store, and buy 3-4 different sizes, take back what you dont need.

As far as the throttle cable goes, you may want to look at some Lokar cables. Something like this may work: Lokar DP-1000U-36 - Lokar Duo-Pak Throttle Cables - Overview - SummitRacing.com Or the other possibility is just making your own.

Heres some pics of other peoples setup Ive found:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...00-w-4bbl.html

Been 20 years since Ive worked on a 300 I6. My first truck I had, had one in it.

Edit: did some looking around, Im betting 3/8 NPT on the plugs!

You might try calling Clifford Performance at 1 (951) 471-1161. They specialize in performance builds on 6 cylinder engines.

I hear you man....my 54 Ford tudor build was a resto-mod.

I dropped a 302/AOD where there was a 239 y-block, switched to disc brakes, etc and it's been one problem solving session after another. The end result is turning out to be really nice, but wow....it's made me learn a whole new set of skills.

CBG,

Yes that the kit. I have to say it's partly my fault forgetting everything I knew....it is a decent kit.

I looked at a couple of the set-ups in the link you added and have some ideas. I just need access to a shop that has some of the tools i don't have any longer. I also figured out in one of the posts I didn't have the carb on backwards....just needed to mount the cable connection on the bottom part of the throttle linkage. When I saw that I couldn't believe that I didn't remember doing that on the past. Doohhh!!!!

Anyhow, It's raining (or getting ready to) here today and this weekend so I'll see what I can come up with using what y'all have suggested here. Right now I have to get the transmission issue straightened out.

Thanks for the help so far.

Later

No problem man.

Now that I think back, the last 300 I6 I worked on back in '95 was running a heavily worked Offy intake, and was pushing 500+ horse, heh. Just been a very long time.
