I am replacing the 3 u-joints and driveshaft bearing on my '65 F250. The driveshaft seems to be pressed on to a splined shaft, but the new one, purchased from LMC, is smooth on the inside with a loose metal collar. Does the bearing need to pressed off, or am I not persuading it properly?
The carrier bearing needs to be pressed off and then the new one can be pressed on. At least that is how mine is set up! My Local Napa did it for me just for buying the Carrier bearing, and U-joints, it was cheap and easy. Mine had a fling ring for the grease, in front of the carrier bearing, make sure they get it tight, or it will ring something fierce. The first time mine sounds like a school bell, but now it is fine...all is quiet!
There is a large collar behind the bearing. Does that come off with the bearing? I also have a small collar on the shaft side. Is that the "fling ring" that you are referring to?

The fling ring is your large collar that faces the transmission it is to keep crud out of the bearing area!
