hey has anyone tried any of these chips that you install in the computer with any success. i see a lot of tem offered by hyper chips & gfchips.com. i looking at one for my 04 expedition with the 5.4L engine. any advice thanks!!
Don't know of any "chips" for the 03-04 Expy, only tuners. Folks have had good results from the hand held tuners, especially ones you can get custom tuned if you've added other mods like exhaust and/or intake.
thanks for the reply. i was just trying to save some dough. i plan on changing the muffler( delta flow) in july i already have a K&N air filter just did a tune up . i was also thinking about going to royal purple oil i've been using the ford motorcraft oil from the dealership.
I've been using RP oil for a couple years, but now I'm getting away from it because of the cost. I really have no brand loyalty, I just look for a full synthetic "big name brand" that's on sale.
I have RP in my tranny, transfer case and differentials.

How much money you got?
You can start with unloading unnecessary weight like running boards, spare tire, jack, unused seats. This will increase your power to weight ratio. Let's face it, these trucks are tanks, not dragsters.
Seriously though, the most basic and popular upgrades to increase performance are some kind of intake and exhaust upgrade. Then add a custom tune to get the most out of those upgrades.
Check out our site sponsor Troyer Performance. They have some nice upgrade packages for all budgets.
Consider any ebay chip equivilant to flushing money down the toilet. I am new to these trucks but not new to Ford V8s. Worked a LOT on the old 5.0 and more limited time with the modulars. Your first mods should be exhaust, cold air intake, pullies and then maybe get a tuner or even a custom tune.
Now, as far as exhaust, just putting a muffler on it isn't really going to do much if anything. Factory exhausts are notoriously restrictive especially on something like a big V8 in a family vehicle where soccer moms would complain if it was noisy. Don't even get me started on some of the Navigator reviews I've read where people complain about hearing the engine period lol. If you are serious about really increasing performance, a FULL free-flowing exhaust from the headers to the tip with a quality muffler and properly sized pipes is where you need to be.
For the intake, slapping a K&N or whatever intake onto it will free up a little power as the factory intake tubing is crap, but it will still be sucking hot air in from the engine bay even with the blocker shield. Ideally you want the intake inlet to be in the fender and REALLY ideally you want to relocate the MAF into the fender as well. Not sure how possible that is on this application though.
Pullies are much maligned but can free up a little power. Aluminum pullies means less rotating mass and slower spinning accessories means less parasitic loss. I've run them for years in my Cobra and 0 issues with cooling or charging (don't change the alternator pulley) or anything.
Rear gear ratio would be next but with a 4x4 it can get pricey. If you have the tow package you have 3.73 gears already which are pretty decent. 4.10s or even 4.30s like the Excrusion would be better for off the line power if you must.
Once you get all the "bolt on" mods done THEN it is time for a chip/tune. An actual dyno tune with a custom chip is THE best way to do this. Just call around and see if any tuners near you have experience with the 5.4 motor. Many should as there are a TON of F-150 guys who mod like crazy. I am spoiled living in the Northeast with access to a lot of tuners though, if you don't have one near you, you can always call up a tuner and have them spec you out a mail order chip specific to your mods.
Hope something in this long book I just wrote helps you out. Just remember it gets expensive fast and you'll never see the money you spent on go-fast goodies again. It sure is fun though.
Oh, also, the Lightning supercharger is almost a direct bolt on for the 03/04 5.4 motors since that is the motor Ford used in the Lightning. Food for thought.
I highly recommend looking into an Edge evolution cs/cts. It is a box tune, BUT you can create a custom tune with it too. Also it monitors just about everything you could want or need to know about the motor. I got one a few months ago for my '00 5.4 and what a difference, seriously woke the truck up, and my mileage went from 15-17avg. to 19-21avg. I got the CS and the custom dash pod from performance truck products for LESS than any place sold just the tuner.
