Stallling issue P0605 code

I'm trying to help a friend diagnose problems he's having with his brothers 97 stroke. All stock 5 speed truck. He has a random stalling issue. He got the codes read and got the P0605 code, I read up a little and told him to look for a chip, and if it was loose. He checked it out, it had a banks ottomind? chip in it (bought truck like this). It was held in by two strips of electrical tape, and when removed the chip would fall out. Sounded like a bad connection to me, so I told him to remove it and try it. He did, and it had NO power at all anymore, like it was running out of fuel. He said when it was running with the chip it had good power except died randomly, now took 10 seconds to rev up to 2200 in neutral. Complete dog on the road. Pulled codes with no chip, got nothing except ebp code, which he had before. Could that banks pos have something screwed up in the pcm not allowing it to run right when removed? It sounded like fuel to me at first and I told him to check the screen in the fuel bowl. He put a new filter in and cleaned the fuel bowl but not the screen 100 miles ago or so. Then he explained it was full of power with the chip so I just want to run all this across you guys. He was going to pull the pcm and check it out and plug the chip back in tonite and try it.

Any more ideas appreciated. Thanks guys.

WAG keys were in the ignition or on and shorted out the pcm. Just a guess though.

Yes, cel would come on when truck would die. That's when the code was pulled.

Keys were not in the ignition.

My thought was try it again with the crappy chip in it, then if it works send the pcm to Jody and get rid of the chip and let him program it.

The only code that came up with the chip unplugged was the ebpv code. 0470 I think. No other codes when it was running like death without the chip. He also said it smoked a lot trying to bring the rpms up.

THIS SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE SHAUNS TRUCK!!!! you take the chip out and its a flat out DOOOOOOOOOOGGGG, but the chip in and it runs like a raped ape! i think he litterally has a lemon. not necesarily a bad thing but by he sounds and testing of it that we did on shauns truck hes kind of limited to his diablo chip now, other chips run funny, shift and smoke bad. the best running we did on his truck was actually took my dp chip tuned for my 2s and it ran very strong and smoked like a Wh*#e LOL
we cleaned and replaced every line, sensor, tube, oring PCM, IDM in the motor you name it! and still the same ol dog with no chip. tell him to buy a new chip(bad connection) and forget about it.
you could also have him try your chip or a friends and see how it revs in park, youll notice a big difference.

Can I use my chip since its for an auto with stage ones instead of stock 5 spd? I'm a little hesitant of putting mine in if something is wrong in there..

Steve, you replaced the pcm too?

What does anybody think of sending the pcm to jody if the damn thing runs ok with the chip back in? That seems to me like it would be the cheapest and best solution, been wrong before though..

sending the pcm to jody will be the same thing as putting your chip in his truck, i recommend doing that first to save the 150$ or what ever the price may be(dont quote me)
yes you can try your chip in his, you can use an auto chip in a manual but not the other way around(an auto will stay in second gear) we tried a swamps chip burnt for 175/30s and shauns truck ran pretty good, used my chip, but it was a 5spd burn for 160/80s and it ran even better. i wouldnt recommend long term use but a spin around the block certainly wont hurt anything. Funny thing is i had bought a TS chip and had matt from gearhead burn it fora 95 auto stock calibration and the truck didnt run much better in his truck vs stock( dog, poor shifting, slow rev blah blah blahhhh) then put matts in my truck and it ripped. sooooo....hear lies the issue we cannot find with shauns truck.

i can only recommend swapping your pcm and idm into his truck and see if it changes anything, we played the game of trial and error and littearlly changed every sensor on my fully functional truck onto his and no change in performance with out his chip, it dumb founds us!!

i believe tuning for 160s litterally only calls for extra fuel, and stock/ stock chipped timing curves, when you start doing nozzles and what not it gets a little more hairy than that

I sent jody an email, see what he says I guess. I still may try my chip, just see what he thinks.

I looked up the banks ottomind, looks like it may be a 2 part pos. I think there is a handheld programmer and a chip. Not positive, but maybe that would explain when the chip was removed it ran sooo bad. Just thinking while typing..

Got an email back from dptuner, they suggested to try another pcm, like was mentioned. I thought of that before too and that is all good, but the only pcm's to try are automatic trans ones. My bud has a 95, or mine is a 97, both auto's. Can we try either one of them(rather use his cause till i get my batteries moved, I really don't want to unhook them unless emergency, cable ends are not good) to see if it works?

I don't know but I have heard that the "Cali" PCM is different than the 49/FED. I hope someone can debunk or confirm what I have heard.

Anyone know if I can just try one of these auto pcm's in the 5 spd truck? The 95 of his or 97 of mine?
