I lost the line on my tremec 3550 today, the dealer sold it out from under me so I need to find an alternative.
I've done some research and found a few topics but what I need to find out is what vehicle application will the Top-Loader come from. The posts I've looked at didn't have the specific info. Like another user here I don't want the shifter to end up under the seat or on the firewall.
So.....my question is.......what Top-Loader am I looking for? These are the application categories one site I visited had listed......
The Toploader was used in several Ford/Mercury products from 64 on. There are several different tailshafts, shifter arrangements etc. There were big input and small input versions. The big input versions were for the high horsepower cars, 428CJ's etc. David Kee Toploaders has all the parts you need to put one of these in an early truck. See the link below.

Yes I know about David Kee. The info I provided was from his site. I'm just not sure I want to drop the money for a new Top-Loader and to buy one for him to rebuild....I would need the info on rear shaft. I also am not sure what spline count I have or the shaft size. I haven't taken the trans out of the truck yet to get this info and didn't want to until I have a firm commitment on getting a new 4 or 5spd. That was the reason for the question. That is unless David Kee will do the rear housing swap in and splines but I'm not sure since I have been unable to reach them all day. Sent an email and called several times but no luck.
If anyone can say what is needed to bolt behind a 300 please let me know. I am not asking without having tried first. Been working on this for 2 days now and I'm going nutz trying to find the info out on the web. There is just too much garbage to sort through when you do a search.
My hunch is you'd need one from a small block car because I believe the bellhousing to be the same as the 300. When you say 300 I'm assuming you're talking about the 300 straight six.
yes, that would be a In-line 300 6cyl. The bell housing for the 300-6, 289, 302 and 351 seem to be the same.
Thank you. But what about for those Full size cars like a galaxie that had small blocks" the tail shaft would be longer so my question remains out of what type of vehicle would I find the correct top-loader?
According to David Kee's website, his shifter for trucks only works with a C4A or C6A tailshaft. The C4A would be the shaft found in 65-67 Galaxies with the 289 and 390 (small input). The 390 bellhousing wouldn't be right for you engine of course. The C6A tailshaft was found in 66-67 427 and 428 Galaxies and would be rare and valuable. I believe David Kee sells the tailhousings although I don't see them listed on his website.

There are no full sized Fords (Custom/Galaxie/500XL/LTD) with a 289 or 302 listed in the car parts catalog available with a 4 speed T/L. Full sized Merc's were not available with 289/302's.

I was thinking that earlier, the info I got was off David Kee's website. While I was searching I tried to remember back to the last time I've seen a factory small block 4-speed Galaxie......never. I'm sure someone will chime in that they or their Dad or they new someone who new someone that had one. Honestly I haven't checked out that many 65-up Gal's because it just seems they aren't as popular as the 64 and earlier. You rarely see them at shows compared to the early ones.
