If you use the hose clamp turn the head to where it faced the tailgate and use a wrench to tighten it. So if the thief doesn't have the wrench it becomes very hard to get. Oh, the factory lock, all it takes is a flathead screw driver to pop the locking mechanism and it's gone!
Nice pics! I installed the same lock over the weekend. Tailgates 'walk away' very quickly and with amazing regularity in Southern California. It's good to have a back-up lock in case I forget to lock the tailgate.
Well, they tried to steal my tailgate yesterday! I think it was when my truck was parked at work in Buena Park. Anyway, I had taken a trip over Memorial Day weekend and after unloading I neglected to lock the tailgate. Fortunately, I had installed the McGard lock and that clearly prevented my tailgate from being stolen as the paint is scratched where they tried to remove that lock. That just saved me the $500 insurance deductible!

went out this morning to see that they stole mine.
I'm pretty po'd right now. It's not the money - I have a $100 deductible, it's the violation.
I've got one we bought at Tractor Supply, but haven't taken the time to install it yet. I'd be po'd if mine got stolen with the lock sitting on the kitchen counter. Haven't heard of it happening here much though, they usually just take the whole damn truck!
UPDATE:
get the lock, and keep it locked.
my replacement tailgate with the step and camera is $4300 !!!
I've bought cars for less money than the tailgate costs
You know, there's another benefit to these beyond just the theft deterrent. I had my tailgate pop off the pin when I was driving with the tailgate down. All it takes is a good bounce with the tailgate down and it can come right off. All of these solutions including the hose clamp would prevent that. Just throwing that out there... I think I'm going to get one for the side benefit.
I think Epic is just looking for a reason to get something for his truck! Jk I had mine come off on the right hand side after I lifted it to close it at a strange angle. Think I noe have a reason to buy something now too. Thanks Epic.
