Brake Pedal

I left chevy and bought a 11 6.7, due to crappy brake and brake feel from the chevys. When test driving this truck the brakes were awsome. all i had to do was touch the pedal and the brakes grabbed. now with just over 2000 miles my brakes are starting to feel like my chevys. the first time you push the brake pedal the pedal has what i feel is excessive travel. then if you push the pedal, left off, press again quickly the pedal is firm at the top. Has anyone else expirenced this

Welcome to FTE and congrats on the new truck. I too came from Chevy D/A to Ford. I had heard Ford had bigger better brakes also. I can't say that I have experienced what you are feeling though. Also, I believe the brake systems are hydro-boost. Meaning they get their power assist through the power steering, I think. If I understand it right. Would a fluid check on the p/s unit help? Just thinking thru my keyboard.

350 has hydroboost brakes while the 250 has vacuum assist brakes. If you're concerned about the pedal feel, I'd go drive another new one and see if it's what you remembered. I would expect that the pedal feel would change after the initial few thousand miles as the rotors glaze some and the pads glaze as well.

Sounds like a question better asked of a service tech. The guys here are a wealth of info but I think a first hand look by a service tech would be better. I have not experienced what are talking about but I may and I would like to know what Ford says.

Good advice, George

Brakes aren't something you should guess about.

Maybe some related info,

I have 2700 on my 11 350 SD. Early last week I noticed a spot in the driveway. Upon further inspection it appears i am leaking PS fluid. I checked the reservoir and it is about 1/2" under the minimum line. I can’t see where it is actually leaking from, as the frame rail is in the way. But it is dripping onto the tie rod and then the ground.

On Friday, i started getting an noticeable groaning noise and pedal vibration when braking. Especially after sitting for a few hours, or driving without applying the brakes for several miles. Turning and braking made it louder and vibrate more.

So perhaps the hydro boost is being affected by the small loss of fluid.

Anyway, I have an appointment, so I’ll let you know what they find out.

When my truck was brand new, I had to have the steering gear box replaced. The seal was leaking power steering fluid. Climb under it and check the steering box out, I bet its leaking there. When mine leaked, the fluid hit the frame and traveled down towards the front of the truck and would drip under the P/S reservoir leading me think it was actually the reservoir itself.

Welcome to FTE!
Good you have an appointment. Brakes are "kind of" important.
Better to have the concern researched by a tech and maybe they'll even have a hydroboost truck with several thousand miles on it.

Since I have a F250 I have vacuum boost brakes and 15,100 miles later mine are still in good shape but I realize it's a different system.

On a side note, does anyone know if the hydroboost system is the same as say the 2010?
If it was, then he would have more options to test from since coming from GM if all the 2011's are low mileage.

I'm probably stealing the thread.....

The service tech discovered a leak in the "hydroboost", which was affecting both the steering and the brakes.

They havent seen one that needed replacing yet. Not even sure how many hours it will take. Hopefully it is a cross year part, and readily avialable.

Part might be in by Friday. They didnt want me to drive it, for fear of losing brakes completely. So the best they could do is offer to reserve me a rental car at my expense.

As far as i know, it just started leaking. I dont remember any specific event. I havent towed anything yet, have about 2775 miles now. To busy to do the towing brake in. So it wouldnt be from over weight braking.

I guess not all man made parts can be perfect.
