I've done it on my 4.9, and it wasn't a hard job, just long and time consuming. If you are a person that keeps track of what you have done and the order of doing it, you'll be fine. A Haynes or Chilton's would be invaluable.
The last time I changed that gasket on my '92 5.8L engine it took about an hour. I have had the upper off a few times while working on other issues so I was familiar with what needed to be done.
the "wave" plenum is hilarious. . . ya need a t40 torx (thank you 198x ford engineers) long/narrow enough to get to the passenger side center bolt. and, while youre there, ya misewell remove all the air pump nonsense and make sure your egr is intact. if the egr pipe is broken, search "egr delete", or "egr removal", or "emission delete", and learn how to get around it for free. or buy a new one. . . .
aaaaand make sure your lower manifold is sealed and in-tact. would be a shame to do all that work and have nothin but loose intake bolts causin huge leaks causin your already-from-the-factory-low-power motor to be even more beat.
