I am putting a performance clutch in my 02 F350. Part of the upgrade included a new flywheel. When I removed the stock flywheel, I noticed some oil leakage well above the crankshaft seal. There appears to be 2 logical places for the oil to be coming from. First is from up above. Rocker cover, etc. The other could be from the rear engine cover. This cover is held in with 8mm bolts. My question is, is there gasket behind this cover? or is it just a bead of silicone? Thanks for any help with this!
The seal is the ring that slides over the crankshaft, the rest is sealed with silicon. If you remove the rear main, might as well get a new one, because it doesn't take much to tweak one and it will leak bad. Also they are pretty rare to leak, although they do from time to time, its not a common thing.
Is it leaking from the turbo pedistal or is there any oil in the engine valley?
Thanks Ziggy, I kind of thought that was the case. I will probably leave it alone since the oil appears to be coming from above. I am doing an air intake upgrade, and glow plugs in the near future. I will check the pedestal then. I am also thinking it may be as simple as the left rocker cover gasket since the majority of the oil seems to be on the left side of the block.
No problem, if you think that it may be leaking from the valve cover, try snugging up those bolts a little more, some of them may not be as tight as they need to be. Also remember the "dog house" or the CCV valve cover housing is on the left rocker too, there are 2 orings between it and the valve cover as well.
