The timing gears on my 95 4.9 300 are shot.
My question: Is this the type of engine where the valves and pistons can be damaged or am I safe in that area?
I mean........I was driving and the engine stopped.
The Gears need replacing (Pushrods are not moving when the engine is cranked).
What happens to the Valves and Pistons in this case? Do they come together or is it the type of engine where it does not matter.
this is a free-spinning engine, so there should be no damage to anything else. i would recomend upgrading to an all-metal gearset, and install new lifters while you have it all apart, maybe pushrods too.
i dealt with one of these in my flatbed awhile back, its a PITA to remove the camshaft with the engine in the truck, but can be done (details on request). and removing the cam is required in order to change the gear.
The 4.9 is a non-interference engine. No damage is done when the timing cam gear
teeth go bad.
I installed a Cloyes metal timing gear set and regret it. The whining noise is
terrible. I should have installed the factory type timing gear set that used a
fiber cam gear.
that quiet whine is the nature of all-steel gears, and is the reason that ford chose a fiber gear, even though it doesn't last as long. they offer a set where the cam gear is aluminum, which is significantly quieter than steel but still much more durable than the fiber.
i'm happy with my all-metal gears, i noticed them at first, but honestly didn't even hear it when i drove that truck a couple days ago
