Tailgate Hardware

Tailgate Hardware
Well, I haven't managed to sell the old truck yet, but I did sell the camper off it.
So now, I can put the original tailgate back on.
Unfortunately, in the intervening years from 1971 to now, the hardware (straps, cups, etc.) have been LOST.
Does anyone have some hardware they are willing to sell me, or a good place to look for such stuff?
Thanks in advance!

2) C4TZ-9944400-A = The R/L straps are the same: 1964/66 F100/250 2WD / 1966 F100 4WD / 1967/79 F100/350.

2) C4TZ-99431B54-A = The R/L strikers (for the latches-mount on body) have the same applications as the hinge cups & 1973/79 F100/350.

1) C4TZ-99431A78-A Right & 1) C4TZ-99431A79-A Left = The rods have the same applications as the hinge cups.

Find the diagram online that shows what is needed for your truck, Bill's list is a good start. Then check the price for all that at a pick-n-pull if you don't have much $$. If price is no object LMC and Dennis Carpenter should have it all. Gotta ask though...why do you want the stock tailgate back on? It just adds weight (lighter = better mpg), so unless you want it to be 100% cosmetically correct...why bother. A tailgate net is cheaper and a couple of 2X12's stacked accomplish the same thing when you are hauling stuff. And if your gate has been off a while, the bed may have spread...making it hard to get the gate back on just right. Encountered that with my 69 F250...it spread so bad that I can only get one side to latch right. Hope your truck was made with the slotted bottom hinge on one side...the older style/models like mine SUC when it comes to pulling/reinstalling the gate...no slot on one side to make it easy like later models. Talk about a PITA.

Hi. I passed the parts list (thanks, NumberDummy! ) on to my mechanic (I'm not very good at such things), and he asks if there are pictures of these, or a PDF excerpt of a catalog we could look at? Tmcalavy mentioned an online diagram - I'll look for one, but if someone has a URL, that would be handy. Interesting about the bed spreading - I hadn't thought of that. It's had a camper on most of its life, so perhaps that would have prevented the bed from spreading much??

This catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com for 22 bucks, and...fordification.com has this catalog on their website.
This catalog has 6,149 pages of text, 1,961 pages of illustrations, so I dunno how much of it fordification scanned and posted.
Another thing you could do is: Contact Green Sales Co. in Cincinnati OH (greensalescompany.com/513-731-3304-help line), and ask them to scan and fax you this sheet metal section page.

tmcalavy,
It is very very easy to notch the bottom of the cup on one side or the other to make the tailgate easier to remove and reattach. email me if you want instructions. I have both a 69 and a 78 F250 with custom notched tailgates.
How much too wide has your box spread? I've talked to people who say they got rectangular tubing that accurately fit the stake pockets, cut a couple of pieces approximately 2 or 3 feet long, inserted them into the stake pockets and slowly pulled them together with a come-along. The ones with the best results would spring the box not more than 1/4' at a time, let everything set for a couple of days or more until the box had accepted the new position and then repeated until they got it right. they say you need to go slightly past the correct difference because the box will spring back some when you remove the pressure. Be real careful not to go too far because it can be a real chore to try to spread it back out without buckling metal and if that happens, then you are in a pickle.
Good luck!

At the risk of becoming anathema to all you enthusiasts, I'm working on my home made tilt utility trailer made from a 64 F Series with a 3/4 ton rearend. Dad bought it on the Indian reservation and all there was was the bed, rear running gear and a gutted cab w/o doors.
My current need is to locate a serviceable tailgate release latch handle. so that I can use one hand to unlock it instead of using both hands and a pair of channel lock pliers. Any suggestions where I can locate one at a reasonable price would be appreciated. None of the local parts outlets have and or even any suggestions on where I can find one.
Here in Spokane serviceable tailgates are like gold and if they aren't usable they just scrap them rather than stripping the hardware of first.
I do however have a 69 F-250 parts truck and a working progress 78 F-250 Ranger 4X4 with a 429 engine and a Waren winch. It is missing the tailgate and needs a lot of work. The parts truck has a Ford factory assembled non-catalog 460 off shore racing marine engine that will eventually get switched out with the 429 before I part it out.
Thank you all for your assistance.

Will 68 to 64 tailgates interchange?
Jeff,
Thank you for your reply.
Will the 68 and 64 tailgates interchange?
I thought they changed the designs in about 67. If the 68s will fit on the 64 with a minimum of modification, then I could just use the one off of my 68 parts truck. Mine is serviceable but in much harder used condition than yours.
Yours sounds like it is way to good to be stuck onto my beat up old trailer.
Thank you.

I'm not real sure what bed I have. The pickup was pretty well gutted and sitting on blocks. All I know for sure is that the taillight lens say 64 on them and the chassis was a 2 wheel drive. The rear end is a 3/4 ton, but it seems to me like Dad said when he got it back to Oregon and started working on it he found the chassis was a 1/2 ton that someone had installed the heavier rear end under.
What I really need is just the handle/latch assembly that goes in the middle of the tailgate if you know of anyone who has a junk tailgate that I could get the handle off of. I really dislike taking a whole assembly out of circulation on these oldies if I can find just the small part I need.
How can I contact you to arrange a meeting? It will probably need to be next week or later because I'm in the middle of mid-terms this week. I thinkI set my profile to allow private/email messages from members if you would rather not broadcast your contact info web-wide. If not, just let me know and I'll change the setting.
Thank you.
