EFI downpipes

I'm preparing to upgrade my exhaust. I want to do away with the header b/c of the starter issues. So I'll pull a set of the efi manifolds to put on. I notice that oem had two down pipes running down under the frame, with a welded brace between them.

I thought I would take those to a point, install an X pipe, 2.25" pipe into two three compartment throaty mufflers, and run both out behind the passenger rear wheel b/c of the gas tanks.

Is there some reason not to use the j/y down pipes?

The stockers are awfully small with crimped bends. Also, you might not be able to find an intact set, as they meet up at the cat, and many junkyards will cut the downpipes with hydraulic shears to get the cats out.

I got a set from the junkyard and where they come together is right into the back of the cat. The yard I got mine from cut it right there so it wasn't a dual into one rather it was just the two pipes. Most places that I have seen around my area chop them right behind the cat and eliminate where it comes into one. Other than that there is nothing wrong with them that I can see. I just tossed the set I had the other day when I hauled a load of scrap! I went with the walker downpipes. It seemed like it revved a little better with two single pipes rather than the walker. You could use the oem pipes and run the x-pipe off of that and go. The brace between them on the pipes I had were actually a round tube between them. Like a tiny h-pipe! LoL. I ran two Thrush welded mufflers with the OEM pipe setup and then just one with the walker setup and it sounded the same I though with both setups. Heres a clip of it at idle.

I like the looks of your setup rider! It is almost exactly what i did for my bronco, but it looks ALOT nicer. I just used the factory pipes and merged them into a single 3" pipe. i have a thread w/ pics in the projects forum (and pics in my gallery)
