Hi all
I am new to the deisel truck scene. I have an 06 F250 Super Duty 6.0 with 177K miles on her. I bought her last year so am still learning about her.
My problem is the fuel gauge. It will read fine one time then out of the clear blue it will drop to E and the engine light will come on. The next time it will read F with me knowing it doesn't have but 1/2 a tank. Any one know what will cause this.
This issue has been on here before, not sure if it will come up in a search or not...but I had this occur and my instrument cluster was faulty and was replaced under warranty. BUT there are several different possibilities that are easier than that. Try the search function or see who else responds. I tried a couple of bottles of Techron, helped some but not in the end due to the true nature of my problem. Also note that folks on here have found that leaving the key on while filling up can cause this. Hope it resolves, I know it can be PITA to resolve.
I always take my keys out of the ignition when I fill up so that is not the case here. The last time it happened I started in my drive way and the fuel gauge read E went to the work, when I started it that afternoon it read full. The next time I started it it read 1/2 a tank. The whole time I had roughly 1/4 tank of deisel in it.
I posted this problem about a year ago that this was happening on my '06 F-350 SD. Took it to my dealer, they said it was a bad sender which is part of the fuel pump. $1200 later it happened again, so I complained to the dealer and they extended the repair warranty, and on returning it the third time for the same problem within the extended warranty period, they agreed to replace it at no charge. Not sure if they will honor a warranty on it if it fails again, waiting to see how long it will be OK. They emphasized that they wanted me to be "Completely Satisified".
Well, I got the second new fuel pump/sender replaced for gratis from my dealer, waited for a month after receiving a customer satisfaction survey form from Ford to see if my fuel gauge problem was finally fixed and thought it was, so I sent it off with a good customer satisfaction rating and guess what ? The problem came back one week later. I knew I should have not sent that survey back so soon. I know it's not really the dealers fault, except I am dissapointed they are having so much difficulty diagnosing an apparent electrical problem. Now I'm wondering if it's really worth pursuing it further.
mine will trip out too whenI fill it up the gauge will say E but the overhead lieo-meter comes right up to 350miles or whatever to empty
after I start the truck a coulpe times the gauge will eventully come up
Mine does this too. I notice that is slowly creeps up after starting the truck sometimes and can take awhile to reach the actual fuel level of the truck. Acts like a lazy sender but who knows? I'm not messing with it right now...

You need to find a better dealer. The gauge sender is not part of the fuel pump. They are either really screwing you over, or are really stupid.
I think the scangauge2 (and other ODBII readers) can read the
fuel level (might be a %, not sure).
Might depend on your model year and engine (it's not in your signature)
Maybe, it would give you another way to see if the sender is stuck
vs. the dashboard gauge is stuck/sticking.
