Hey guys I have a question about my axle seals. When I bought the truck a year ago and brought it to the dealer to have them just check it out and make sure everything was alright with it they noticed that the driver side axle seal was slightly leaking and wasnt a concern at the time. So the other day I went to get my truck and noticed a spot of oil, got down and looked and my seal is really leaking now.
Here is a picture of the seal. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlink So my over all questions are, is that the axle seal where the red arrow is pointing (in the picture)? And has anyone ever done them before? if that is the axle seal then it doesnt seem that difficult from what alldata is saying.
AJ, what your arrow is pointing at is just the "dust seal". It is supposed to keep dirt and moisture out of the axle shaft.
I have the same problem with oil leaking out of my axle also and have been told the entire axle needs removed from the chassis and taken apart in order to get the differential opened up. The seal we need to replace can only be repaired from the inside of the differential.
I just replaced all of the seals needed to keep my shift on the fly working properly but apparently when I slid the axle shaft back into the differential I knicked the oil seal.
Rob is correct, the picture is just the dust seal. The seals that leak are inside the axle tubes near the pumpkin.
You wouldn't have to remove the axle from the truck unless you just wanted to. You would have to jack the front end up, remove both tires, hubs and axle shafts, and open up the chunk and remove the ring gear to be able to replace one of those seals.
Thanks for that Ziggy!! Do you know of a decent write-up with lots of pictures for this repair? I have searched and found some comment threads but no real write-up.
I am in no hurry to do this as mine is not leaking real bad but I do want to get in done before the snow season comes back.
What really sucks about doing this is that I just put all new seals in the axles but once I do this repair I have to replace them all again!!
Between the seals and orings this truck is gonna be the death of me!!!
is that manual just for a 99?? and when i get time later today I will take some screen shots of all data and show what they are saying because for some reason they are saying that the axle seals just come out with the removal of the axle?? I know my ford guy said its a big job.

It's the ones ford came out with in 99, any changes, or different parts they have used since then wouldn't be in there, but for the most part its all there. Most of the parts, processes and systems through the years are the same.
To each his own, but it's not a "major" job IMO. For a ford tech this shouldn't be bad, it just seems like alot of stuff to take off.
Jack it up, remove both front wheel, locking hubs, brake calipers and rotors. Remove the unit bearings and axle shafts.
The open up the diff, and remove the ring gear and bearings. Now you can get in there to replace the seals.
You would need the tools to take all of that off, a tube of silicon, the 2 seals and some gear oil.
The seals will stay in the axle tubes, they don't come out on the axleshafts when you remove them.
Sounds good ziggy. Thanks for all the info. Do you know what page in the ws manual it is for the seals? For some reason its having a hard time scrolling through on my comp.
