Is this even possible??

I have an 04 F250 PSD CC with 102K. I have been my most recent set of tunes from Eric and I have been using them since October when I did my ARP studs, HG's, and some other things.

Around a month ago my truck overheated while towing a car in a trailer to NJ. I added more coolant and took it easy on her (MY EGR was not plugged in at the time)..

Around 2 weeks ago my truck overheated while towing a Ferrari in a trailer. The truck overheated and the trip was only around 15 miles.. This time it overheated with the EGR plugged in.

I work very close to home so the truck dosent reach full operating temps on my drive back and forth to work and I havent had any significant problems during my commute other than white smoke.. I think I narrowed the white smoke to a alternator / low voltage issue causing the FICM to act up...

Back on topic:

Sunday I drove to a friends house around 40 minutes away while NOT towing at all and my truck overheated BAD!! The worst its been. I was normally driving in my Extreme Street tune and I havent had problems all winter. I was not under load nor driving on it hard..

Here is my question:

I started using this set of tunes in October when it was in the 40*-50* range outside.. Its been cold all winter, I have plowed all winter and I have not overheated.. Now that its spring and the temps are warmer outside I am starting to have problems..

Last night, My cousin Pete (VlietRacer64) and I hooked up his laptop to the truck and took a ride, it overheated again.. We noticed the big fan would not go over 400 RPM's regardless of my speed or engine temps.. The truck blew 2 gallons+ of coolant out of the degas bottle..

We let it cool down, topped it off, and removed Eric's tune (returned the truck to STOCK) and it ran, drove, and acted GREAT!!! The fan's work great and there was no overheating. I went on an hour plus drive and specifically tried to get it to overheat and it wouldnt.

Question: is it possible that Eric messed up my tunes somehow and made it so that my fan shouldnt come on?

Can I send the tunes Eric wrote me to someone to have them checked over? This is a shock to me, I have been running Eric's tunes in my truck (Before the stud job) for years and I have been overall happy with them..

Can someone please send me or post Matt's Info so I can get a set of tunes from him and try them out??

Sorry for the long post, Any help, guidance is greatly appreciated!!

-Rob

It is possible that the tunes are screwing with your truck...

I had an SCT tuner with tunes from matt and my truck would always stall...took the tune out and junked the tuner...been good ever since.

Call Eric,it is posable that the tune is screwed up.I have a ultra comp from spartan that was written screwy and it will boost 45psi (Matt wrote another that boosts normal for me),not good for the turbo but I run it sometimes for a blast.

The power of the tune is great, no complaints there BUT it seems my "rides" are limited until I blow a HG or something bigger with no fan

could it be the fan clutch is worn out

If returning to stock made it run better maybe it is the tunner

Not sure it's your tunes..... been running eric's tunes for 9 years......

if you are convinced it's tune related - go back to where you got them and ask....

I honestly couldn't drive my truck 'tuneless' cuz it would be relatively gutless

Where you tuned when towing ? MOST tunes have a tow limit just lke your truck does...
say if you were going up hills with 10,000 lbs at 80 mph - THAT might do something to it...
if that's the issue, new tunes from Matt or anybody else will not fix it - I promise !

My guess is there is an underlying issue with your truck and the tuner just magnifies it.. Time to troubleshoot...

From your signature, is it possible all your gauges indicated other issues ?
Have you thrown any codes ?

what is your eot - ect differential ?

good luck !

I personally recorded and watched all data on my AutoEnginuity software and while in the extreme street tune the duty cycle of the fan stayed at 0% and fan rpm only slightly change as expected with engine rpm. in stock mode fan duty cycle changed constantly and rpms of fan raise and lowered to keep motor at a constant 190* where in tune mode during a quick highway pull from 50mph to 80mph temps would spike to over 220* and fan duty cycle stayed at 0% and fan rpm's stayed around 400 where motor rpms were around 1200.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I was very surprised to see thoes results myself, think he got by daily driving sice oct. with upstate NY cold temps? Now that temp is breaking and getting in to lower 70'S.

You read my mind: I just sent him this:

Matt,

I have a 2004 F250 PSD and I would like to try your custom tunes, how many tunes fit in a handheld SCT X3 tuner? I already have the SCT X3 and I have been running Eric’s tunes for years. I recently did some upgrades including ARP head studs and gaskets on my truck and I got new tunes from Eric and I had a bad experience so I wanted to try out your tunes. I am a member on ford-trucks.com, powerstrokenation.com, and many other sites, from what I see everyone likes your tuning abilities so I want to give it a shot. I would like to get:

Street Race Lite (SRL)
Studded SRL (SRL++)
8000 Lb Tow (8K Tow)
Unlimited Tow

Do you have anything for a fuel economy tune?
Do you have a tune for snow plowing?
Anything else you can recommend?

These are the modifications I currently have in my truck:

ARP Head Studs, Black Onyx Head Gaskets, Complete First Coast Diesel Performance EGR Delete with welded intake (EGR is currently plugged in and zip tied to something), Banks Cold Air Intake, Intake Elbow, Turbo drain Upgrade, Stainless Steel Fuel Crossover (in rear of heads), Diesel Site Coolant filter setup, Turbo Back MBRP exhaust, 7 ISSPRO gauges (pyro, boost, volts, coolant temp, trans temp, oil temp, fuel pressure).

I just had my truck flashed with a new stock tune to date the flash back to when the truck was new so I have a good starting point.
