I have a 93 F150 4x4. A couple months ago I got 4.56 gears on my truck. I also had them replace the ball joints and axle pivot bushing because my tires were pointing outward. It fixed it for the most part. But now, every so often, my steering goes haywire. Its happened 5 or 6 times now. Usually when it happens when backing out of a parking spot while cutting the wheel sharp. The truck starts pulling really hard to the right. I have to hold the wheel almost 90 degrees to the left while driving. It'll stay like that for maybe a mile or two then go back to normal if i make another sharp turn or back into a spot, turning the wheel hard. Doesn't always fix it though, it'll go back to normal randomly. Very confused and frustrated.
Steering linkage/tie rods all new- I did them last summer.
the truck has a 6 inch suspension lift with 35 inch tires.
it was aligned by the same shop after the tie rods were replaced then again after the ball joints were replaced.
the steering does not get harder when it happens, except for the fact that its pulling so hard to the right.
I am having similar issues on my 1992 f150 5.8 with 33" tires 4" lift. I checked everything on it for play with the front end of the ground and checked the wheel bearings. I was wondering how to tell for sure the steering box is shot and how to check a salvaged one from the scrap yard. Or would it be one of those things that would be better to get remand/new.
I'm not sure how to diagnose a bad steering box, but I just rebuilt Thumpers box last year to try and solve irratic steering problems I was having. They are pretty easy to do and if you watch PowerBolck I think they just did a how to on rebuilding steering boxes. Anyway, steering boxes can be fixed and/or rebuilt... seal/rebuild kits can be had for $30-$60. I will admit they are tricky to do if you aren't meticulous with details. Leaks are prevelant with home rebuilds...
