Well i have had my truck for a fews months and just noticed today that the button on the end of the shifter is not working. any help with diagnosing? it is a 2000 crew cab long bed automatic 4X4
For awhile there I thought mine wasn't working either. Then I pressed it real hard one day and it did work. I just got a replacement from the dealer for under $20.
Mine wasn't working either when I purchased my '02 F250 PSD SC 4x4 two months ago...I took the covers off the steering wheel housing and traced the wire which looked perfect - no abrasion at all on it's taped cover....all fuses good to go...my local mechanic bought a new button and installed it (simple) and still no dice....he then took the covers off and removed the wire's tape cover and found the wires broke inside! He bought a new shift lever assembly from the local Ford place and now all is well. IF you only need a button, I have two spares - presuming the original one was still good ... but look inside the wire cover to make sure they're not broken as well as looking for abrasion to their cover. It's easy to remove the shift lever for this ... just search for the instructions on here...
thanks for all the responses and will try to check out this weekend. the truck is not going out of overdrive when i do hit the button so i dont think the button is working, or the wire is cut.
almost guaranteed its the wires broken at the pivot point in the shift lever.
Skip the switch and buy the whole lever assembly. I think I paid 50-60 bucks for it from Ford. Simple to change, just punch out the pin and disconnect the wire harness.

Does anyone have the part number for the shift lever assembly? I definitely need this part...
