I have a 460 that i just bought and i plan on making it a performer motor or the mud races.. i am looking to crank out a little over 600horse with out using nos. so i am looking to find double spring valves. i am using the original heads or do i need to upgrade to something different to use performance valves since that is what i am wanting to use. i am using roller rockers. pistons.. they are going to be flat top. also am not boring anything out. but i am also looking for a .500 lift cam or anything bigger, how ever if i decide to go bigger how do i shim everything to make it work? i just need some help looking/finding these parts. please help me asap because i plan on getting this put together around at the end of fall season. i am using a NON-EGR aluminum 4 barrel intake.
I am getting my block, heads, crank, main caps, connecting rods all done wen i get my new pistons in the mail.... p.s. how much would raised top pistons and heads run me if i wanted to do that? cant find anything on them.
Join this site and do a lot of reading. What year of heads and block do you have? Plan on aftermarket rods and a ".500 inch" lift cam is not going to get you 600hp, more like 375-425 depending on compression, heads, intake etc. My suggestion is set a budget and expectation along with true intended use of your engine.
It comes down to casting numbers. If your motor came from a 77' then it likely will have a D1VE block with 10.322 deck height and D3VE heads and is internally balanced. Not a bad foundation, but, what are your realistic goals for the engine/vehicle, then comes the budget and what you can afford to do? 600hp is not an overly complicated goal but it takes $$, and a competent builder that knows 460's.
this motor would b my very first big block/high performance motor... i used to have a jeep (blew the motor out of it) then i got my truck now that has a 351m in it so next motor thats going in it is the 460

I feel your pain on the 351m.....pretty gutless. As I said, join the 460 Ford forum and read as much as you can. There is a ton of knowledge and helpful folks their as well as vendors that know the 429/460 engine. There are simple thing you can do to improve the 460 and there a lot of ways to decrease it potential as well. Common upgrades thing are zero deck the block to 10.300" (70 and early blocks excluded) Run a split duration/lift cam, and porting the stock heads for improvement. I can't express enough that this is where you need to go to learn about the 460 and how to build what you want correctly the first time.
