The number of ribs shouldn't make that much (if any) difference. The diameter is where you could be having issues. If the pulley is larger than what it should be, it will turn the pump slower. Slower pump means you need a faster engine speed to produce the same pressure.
That being said, replacing the pump is probably the best choice anyways. If the fluid was leaking (even slowly) there is a very good chance it was run dry, or too low and got damaged.
Ok, maybe I should have been more clear. The 8 rib pulley is 5 25/32nds. The 6 rib pulley is smaller, dont remember the diameter, but its smaller.

You're right, I did see the diameter there, but no comparison to what it should be. My truck has V-belts, so its not totally useful. However, I just did a quick measurement, and the diameter is a bit less than 6 inches. I was going to say that the diameters shouldn't be that different, but I'd need to know the size of the crank pulley for both systems to actually compare them.
In any event, small differences in diameter won't have a big affect, so if its a fraction of an inch, its probably not a big deal. An inch or so would change the RPM's quite a bit.

Yeah, comparing a v belt system won't do much good. So you think its just a bad pump then?
Yeah, its so annoying when you read a problem from a old thread and no one ever followed up. Was the pulley bigger the the correct one?
The new pulley I bought that was listed for that and all the diesel fords for that era is the same one on a powerstroke 7.3. Apparently they had 3 belt sizes that year. 6 rib (mine) 7 rib (some odd one out) and 8 rib (powerstroke). You just use the same pulley and put the belt in the correct spot on the pulley according to how many ribs your belt has. Doesnt really seem right to me but it works like a charm so Im not worried about it.
