I hauled a big load of scrap metal over the weekend. The truck+trailer+scrap weighed 14,900 lbs. The drive to the scrap yard is 35 miles, mostly highway. On the way over there I took it real easy. I was able to tow it fine but it really slowed down a lot going up hills. When I weighed out of the yard the truck+trailer was 9,900 lbs. On the way home I held the pedal on the floor for about 20 miles and never even got to 70 mph. I had cars flying by me the whole time and all I had was an empty tandem axle dump bed trailer. My question is, is this about normal? Without the trailer, the truck will break any speed limit, but it really feels any load it seems. This is a NA 6.9 4x4 c6 with 3.55 gears. Is 15k a lot for this rig? I was planning to get a travel trailer to pull 300 miles one way but I don't want to have to drive 55 with it.
ive pulled over 20,000 at 60 mph here in missouri, had 16,000 going 80 down I70 about a month ago. just last week pulled a john deere 630F platform up a pretty steep grade (we don't have signs here that list the grade but she was steep)
My truck seems to do the job but I think the injection pump and injectors are original gray. Ours couldn't hang on hills with 24 ft. travel trailer on hitch @ 5500 pounds, 1200+ pounds in bed and cab full of people. Truck is forced rather quickly to scream in 1st gear.
It was like that with one smaller than stock tires and 3.55 gears, and recently we swapped in 4.11 gears and my impression is that it made it worse past 1st gear with the loads
We are going to be replacing the injection pump and injectors soon as I have multiple leaks now after I experimented with some wvo blend.
This is my observation after owning and enjoying my diesel club wagon for more than ten years now. The previous rigs were VW's. They were quick, slow, or no-go, and trained me for uphill patience.
Now I have A/C, A/T. G/V OD. And I'm still happy with six-tee.
I depends on how big the hills were. Towing with a 18K rig on my hills, I couldn't get over 25mph when I was n/a.
I watched some youtube videos and I actually think mine runs a little better than average. The 0-60 isn't bad at all, and many times it will will squeal my 265/75/16 BFGs when floored from a stop. It starts easy, idles good, and just sounds right so I dont think it needs anything really.
I have no idea how many miles are on it bc the odometer wasnt working when I bought it. The injection pump looks like a reman because it is so clean compared to everything else. The motor may be a little wore though, the oil pressure gauge reads almost nothing at hot idle, but will come to halfway with the RPMs up, I also get a little constant mild blue smoke, so who knows, maybe it is high mileage. The previous owner said it was only around 100k miles but I have learned that he lied an awful lot about a lot of things that day.
I might shell out the cash for a complete new turbo kit. I really enjoyed watching the videos of the turbo 6.9 trucks, they are a whole different animal. I am afraid of blowing head gaskets though, and feel a little bit intimidated about the downpipe installation.

My first F250 was an 86' with a 6.9, I bought it in 89'. First time I pulled my camper and boat I was so pissed at the truck I swore I was going to sell it when we got back from vacation. 22 mph over a 6% grade, fully loaded semi's were passing when there were passing lanes and complaining about the "tourist" when there weren't passing lanes.
Ended up putting an ATS turbo on, had the injection pump built and re-calibrated, 3 inch exhaust. Next trip with the same load, over the same hills was 63 mph. Had 4sp and 3:55 gears, factory tire size.
I don't think I could stand to drive one of these without a turbo and power jacked up some. My dad bought his new in 87' and lasted 2 years and about 6,000 miles before he put on the banks system and had the pump done.
Aurora is only ATS, banks comes with a sidewinder turbo. I would get used, maybe new if I had the cash. I wish I had turbo'ed it before the tranny blew, yes.
There are new kits still available, just not being produced anymore. They are on ebay, summit racing etc. Here are some examples.
would suggest getting mechanical gauges if you don't have any. at idle there should be 20lbs pressure minimum and around 2000 rpm 40lbs pressure. if you hook up a mechanical gauge and find low pressure then i would take the $2000 for the turbo kit and invest it in a works kit from international/ford for the engine to get it up to par for the future turbo.
