Putting my 77 4x4 back together after my fire(!). Truck has stock suspension, running 35x16.5x12.0 Currently sporting 16.5 wheels and thinking of some new mags. Went to check on getting some new skins and found out 16.5 is somewhat rare these days. America's Tire co told me BFG All Terrains are one of the few 16.5 tires made anymore - and they are currently back ordered.
16.5s are real oddballs. I wonder why FoMoCo even went with 16.5s unless bias plys with umpteen belts were the rage back in the day.
IMO, 17s look kinda naked on these rigs. I like 15x8s (with 35s) or 15x10s (>35s).. tires are generally less expensive that the high falootin' 17s (or bigger).

Everybody bump it up to 17?

Your call.
im guessing this truck is a F250? With 8 lug hubs. Since its got 16.5's..
Im thinking that may rule out 15's
Most people go with 16's
But when running 33" (or larger) im a fan of 17's
But tires for sixteens are a little cheaper
Let us know what u find
Edit: Btw, seventeens are becoming the common size in truck tires (especially 3/4 ton trucks)
I have a 79 250 and dual piston calipers, and unless I do some grinding on them 16s would be rubbing the rim... I have three sets of 16.5s all with rubber and two of the sets Have prolly less than 5000kms on them, actually my flat bed rubber still ahve the lil nubs on the tread face. I'm goin to be lookin for some 40+ hopefully I can keep my wagons... I dunno?
Well next time you're up give me a shout... And I will keep the wagons if I can find some meats if not than I figure I will have to go with 17s. The ones on my 4x are 35x16.5x12.5 bfg's and I think the wheels are 10" wide.
I really don't think I can go 16s, right now I have approx 1/4" between my caliper and rim. That's why I figured I would have to grind the caliper down if I wanted to go smaller. Personally I like little wheels and lots of rubber, to many people running big ghey wheels and rubber bands... So stupid on trucks, but that's just me I guess??
I'd go with 16s. Tires will be cheaper and you'll usually have more selection than 17s. If you know the tires you want are available in 17s though, then it's just a matter of $$.

I'm looking at getting new wheels/tires for my truck as well. I've been looking at getting Cragar Soft 8's or Series 342 D Windows.
I also have dual piston calipers up front (78 F250 4x4). How big is the clearance issue? I mean how much would I have to shave off the caliper to get 16"s on there? Am I definitely going to have to go with 17" s?
I'm looking to run tires anywhere from 31"-35" by the by
sorry, yes 8 lug F250 4X4. Tires are 35's, you favor 17's then?

Currently looking for some 265/70-16 tires to replace the twenty year old 9.75x16.5's
