Backup alarm question

After disconnecting both batteries to install a new starter(or coincidence) my backup alarm started to make a higher pitch sound. Also the light on the shutoff switch stays on and now the alarm doesn't work. Where do I start troubleshooting. By the way it has been raining almost everyday here in S.W. PA. Sometimes after washing it would not function.

If you have access to a scan tool (not just a code reader) then it can pull codes from the controller and point you in the right direction. I'm currently evaluating a new scan tool for my shop - the Snap On Solus Pro couldn't find a similar problem with mine but the OTC Genisys Evo says one of my reverse sensors is faulty. Haven't had a chance to go any further but it will be on the agenda for this week. Not sure if mine is just a strange situation - but mine actually works when the temp is below 40* or so but once it warms up it acts similar to the way you are describing your issue.

I read somewhere that if the light on the switch is always on, it is the speaker, and if it is only on when put in reverse, its a sensor. Using this info, I replaced my rear speaker and it worked TEMPORARILY, then back to not working and light always on. Based on this, I would only trust the proper scan tool, like tdappleman stated.

My guess would be a sensor - may have moisture in it causing the issue.

One sensor is on its way out. The Parking aid module tests the sensors as soon as you put it on reverse. It theres an open inside of the sensor itself.. then it will turn off the System to prevent a false reading and ultimatelely an accident. I have 2 that are broken since i bought it but havent got around to changing those expensive buggers..

Where do you buy them at? Ford quotes ~$129, Tousley has them for ~$80, but I found a thread from 2005 that says they were ~$53! Did they really go up in price that much since then? Part # is YL1Z-15K859-AA and/or 1L1Z-15K859-AA I have two bad ones, not about to pay ~$160 just to get the back up sensors working.

When (if) mine fail I don't see me replacing them. I hate the damn beeping noise, and my trailer hitch sticks out far enough that I'll hit what's behind me before it beeps badly. And I get tired of hitting the button every time I tow and have to back up. Strenuous, I know, but I still don't reap the benefits of the sensors more than I **** and moan about them.

haha. See, I've never had sensors and I don't even feel I need them (they may be nice, though I can't even say for sure!), but because of my (self diagnosed case) of obsessive compulsive disorder, I feel I HAVE to fix them...because they're broke. I don't care if I don't use the, it just bothers me that they're broke haha. Damn OCD. Maybe I'll just unplug the switch so the light never comes on...that'd be a "band-aid" of a solution, but it may suffice my OCD haha.

HAHA. unplug one of them.. or take out the fuse.

I guess having a rear view camera would be the best.. that way u know exactly whats going on back there. Ive only had mine for 2 months and i wish i had either.. its not easy parking on my street with this thing. Ive been driving a Ford Escort for 2 years.

Suggest you get a water hose and wet each individual sensor until you find the one that is bad. Plan on spending about $75 per sensor.

I completely understand. Having something that doesn't work, whether I use it or not, bugs me too. You're gonna have to fix it ya know.

Just park in spots that don't require you to backup.

That's not OCD!

Do you check your tire pressure every week - including the spare?

Do you do a walk-around periodically looking for burned out bulbs:
license plate, side markers, high mounted brake light, backup bulbs?
