I have the backup sensor system, and occasionally turn it off with the dash switch when backing up a boat trailer. Never had to manually turn it back ON, because it is supposed to default to the ON position during startup.
Twice this week, after starting the vehicle, the OFF light stayed on the next day, and the system did not default to the ON position. (nearly backed the truck through the garage wall cause the damned thing didnt beep when it was supposed to!)
Works fine today, so problem seems intermittent...anyone experienced this and is there a fix?
Well I was at the dealer and I was talking to the service lady and I have gotten to know her pretty good and she hooked it up to the computer for free for me. You might be able to look at the face of them and see if any are damaged and that could tell you. Also you can lay on the ground and looking behind the bumper you will see the connection. See if there is any loose wires. They are really easy to take out. Its just a clip. You can try spraying some wd40 on the connectors and that might solve your problem. I havent looked at buying new ones but I have heard they are like 100 a piece. I dont need them that bad.
Well when my dads went out on his expedition I bought one sensor from the dealer for about $100, they wanted another $100 just to tell me which one was broke, so I just took it home and swapped it out one by one till I found the defective one. Being your problem is intermittent though, that might not work so well.
I had the same problem and it was one of the sensors. My truck is still under warranty so I just took it back to the dealer and they replaced it no charge. Has been working great ever since.
We have had the problem on our explorer as well, and one other item to check before dropping $100 is the reverse lights. We have a defective lens that lets water inside, and then shorts out the reverse light. This also causes the backup sensor to default to "off".
put in reverse and listen to each sensor (key on). they should be clicking away. you may have to put your ear right to them to hear them. the one that doesn't click is the one that needs replaced.
one of them is not clicking. Does anyone know the part number for 2006 F150 and if they are necessarily the same on Lincoln and Expedition? I would have a hard time spending $100 at the dealer for these.
Will try a junkyard or Ebay but will they fit?
the sensors are $186.00 each in Canada...got one on EBAY for $34. and it fixed the problem. So that's over 500% profit for the dealer when they sell these little f-ers to some rich old fart---not bad.
