Does anyone know where to start to look for charging problems on a 97 250 4x4 5.8? I replaced the positive cable to the starter because it was fried (made contact with the exhaust manifold) New starter, took alt. off and had it bench tested at NAPA, replaced one battery (2nd battery showed good as I tested both with load tester) Not getting and voltage to gauge. Could this be a fuse link or a relay and where would I find it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Dobber.
measure the battery voltage on truck to be 12.5 votls or so... start truck and measure the battery voltage to go up to 14.5 or so... If it does not, go to the alternator and measure the votlage with + lead on teh big terminal and - lead on the case or battery ground. Alternator may be good, but the connections to it may be bad. Check all ground wires and straps.
Thanks I'll check that out, there is a braided ground wire from passenger side firewall to the exhaust that is rotted off could that have anything to do with it? I cleaned and reclamped both batteries terminals.
If the gauges wiring harness ground through the chassis I'd say it's possible. You can also induce premature heater core failure, electrolysis, if ground straps are not connected properly.
