2 problems with it, not sure if they're directly related or not:
- Shifter is sloppy going into the gears. Sometimes I have to "fish" for the sweet spot to get it into gear, mostly reverse. Also doesn't completely go into Park unless I knock it in a couple of times. -- I suspect the transmission cable is the culprit here, either slack or the end slipping at the steering column end.
- Once I get it into gear, it kind of eases in. For instance, when I get it into reverse I have to rev the engine a bit and reverse slowly engages.
Could the second problem be caused by the sloppy cable not getting the linkage into the proper position, or is it independent of the cable and indicative of an impending rebuild?
There are some torx bolts on the shifter column that need to be tightened that are under the dash. There have been several threads regarding this so do a search. Some have pics that will help a ton. It's a 15 minute job according to those that have done it. Once it is tightend up all those problems may disappear.
Thank you for the replies. I don't have a Torx 25, but was able to check the triangle shaped bracket mentioned. The screws appear to be tight and there is no play at all between the bracket and the shifter, or the cable end.

In that case remove the top cover off the steering column. Under it you will find the shifter shaft and two bushing that it runs through. See if these bushings are missing or worn out.
