I recently puked some trans fluid from my 2000 4r100 with 92000 miles on her. I was backing into the drive with my 30' 8000lb camper that I plan to pull at least 12 times a year. After it cooled down it didnt leak again untill it got up to 175+ degrees and even then it was only starting to seap around the rubber plug. I have since took it to my local trans shop. I know it is probably the front pump seal and or maybe the bushing. He is trying to push a torque converter on me too. He hasnt pressure tested the converter yet but will do all the test and let me know on Monday. He said he uses a custom converter that is better than stock. He will warranty any part that he installs for 12 months. If he rebuilds the trans he warranties the trans for 3 years or 100,000 miles. I do plan to add a 6.0 cooler if I can find one or a true cool if I cant find the 6.0 cooler. I have heard nothing but good things about this shop but i feel he may be trying to screw me. They charge $450 just to drop the trans. Does this sound ok?
I have a few questions,
With 92k miles should I just replace or rebuild the trans?
If I do have them rebuild it they have differant levels of rebuilds...What are some key items I should upgraded in the trans?
Would I be ok just replacing the seal and maybe the converter?
With pulling the camper how long should my trans last without the rebuild?
The only option I would consider for my trans needs would be a John Wood built trans. If for some reason I couldn't get in touch with John, Brian at BTS would be my only other option.
That includes getting stranded somewhere towing my trailer. I'd wait until John shipped me out a trans.
