Im working on a 76 f100, that has a 95 5.0 put in it... Im looking into purchasing a set of heads and new cam and what not for it.. the only question i have is... how can i tell if the motor is a hydrolic roller cam or flat tappet... i do know that the heads are e7te, my dad replaced the engine years ago and i enharreted it this way... It may be a newbie question but i had to ask...
Also.. im looking into purchasing a set of RHS hydrolic roller heads, and a new Comp cam... another question is...(im new at all this so) if im replacing the heads and cam, should i go ahead and get the cam and lifter kit from COMP and buy the heads...and do i have to purchase anything else... just looking for some general knowledge before i buy a bunk of misc parts that dont jive together....
that year motor should be roller cam. you can tell with the lower intake off. there are some metal clips between the lifters that look like dogbones.
will this motor be efi or carbed?
decide on a cam and then check out the valve spring recommendations. then contact RHS and ask them what springs are on the heads and if they can setup them up for what you need or not. this will determine if you buy the cam kit or not.
the motor is carbed.. its in the truck in running condotion... im basically putting together my own top end kit. just didnt know if it was a flat tappet or not... and wanted to change to a roller.. but didnt know what all was involved
pull a valve cover and you might be able to look down and see the lifters. if not remove a rocker arm and pull out a push rod. then measure the pushrod.
I use to be able to remember which was what length. but the roller lifter is shorter by 1/2-3/4?? of an inch than the older 302s.
you can look up pushrods on any cam companys site like comp or Crane.
If its a non roller and you want to switch it over and it has a roller block there is not much to it. you would need of course the roller cam, roller lifters, and the spider web and dog bones kit. and the set of slightly shorter roller pushrods
