Pertronix Install = Engine Tick

After installing the Ignitor with Flame Thrower Coil, we now have a slight tick coming from around #1 cylinder. Timing set at 10 degrees, Ignitor set to specs.
Ideas?

i'm waaay out on a limb here, but...i'm assuming the Flamethrower coil is hotter than what you had before. if nothing else changed...

any chance this is an electrical arc down near the bottom of the spark plug wire? how's it running? any hint of a miss?

Running smooth, just has a noticeable tick.

Correction...

OK, found the tick was not related to the Pertronix. However, since installing the Pertronix and coil, the truck upon coming to a stop, bucks and diesels then stalls. Happens every time coming to a stop. Also tried dropping it into neutral before the stop and the same thing happens. This problem did not occur with the points setup. It runs smooth and accelerates perfectly, just dies at every red light. Idle speed is at 750-800.

I think I may pull the Pertronix this weekend and reinstall the points to see if anything changes.

Ideas???

Electronic ign. does not cause those issues.

Timing and idling can be a little too high to cause the shutdown problems.

Forgot to mention, the timing is at 14.

What are the recommended idle and timing settings? (I6 300 Auto)

I'd back the timing off to about 12 and see what happens. "Dieseling" or run on, is usually caused by unburnt fuel in cyl igniting.

6 degrees with a manual trans.

10 with an automatic.

You have way to much initial.

It should be 14 full in on the centrifugal advance at 2000 RPM.

Yes, checked for leaks and didn't find any. Currently the idle is at 750-800 and timing at 14.
I will set timing for 10 as stated earlier, and drop idle a little. However, we had it at those levels and the same condition existed.

By pumping the brake while idling has no effect on the stalling. Only stalls approaching a stop while traveling.

i'm no expert, but this doesn't sound like an ignition problem to me.

as a test, try bumping your idle speed up a couple hundred rpm, and going for a spin. make sure the test drive is long enough to get the engine fully warmed up.

i think you accidentally threw some of the gang off here by saying "dieseling". you're not having trouble shutting it down, you're having trouble keeping it running- correct?

If your truck is a factory automatic it will have a antistall dashpot on the carb. Mis adjustment of this or a bad diaphram will cause the stall on stopping as the carb throttle plate close to much.

Just what do you have as a transmission?

Carburator is the original Holley, rebuilt by Holley. Three speed auto.

The "dieseling", or bump and knock upon stopping, (then stalling), all occurred after installing the Pertronix.

I will post an update after the points are back in.
