good day i picked up a 79 ford f100 parts truck a few weeks ago and drove it 200 miles home and it realy pulled strong with a 302/2bbl/c6/2.75 rear end i was quite surprized by the power this little engine has and in talking with the pos dad he sent me an invoice for work done by a local ford dealer so it was a brand new crate "ford motorsport' engine 302 HO and the trans was rebuilt also [c6] and according to the kms on the invoice compared to the speedo this power train has about 30.000 miles so it is a good score for my 79 granada as that engine is wore out to the point that its not even worth fixing so does any one have info in what the "ho" parts would be?
the biggest thing about an HO is a different cam/firing order. The HO uses a 351w cam and the firing order is changed to get better performance. Not sure about the actual cam specs as you can use any 351w cam in a 302 block.
I have a 289 in my truck with a 351w cam in it. I am running one form comp Cams, but don't have the specs handy.
so i would think basicly cam and maby compression ratio would give the extra performance as i would think a 4bbl carb/intake would realy make this little motor turn
The standard run of the mill HO as seen in Mustangs and Lincoln Mark 7's have a roller cam, most have E7 heads(only the 86's and some 87's don't), flat top pistons, the crank has a 50oz imbalance, and a 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order. Nothing really too special about them other than the usual parts. However, if this is a Motorsport built one, it might have a larger cam (b303 or e303) and such. Check the invoice for a part number for the crate engine to see what the rest of the info with the engine are. Hopefully the engine came with the distributor. As the older dizzy gears like what came in the truck will get chewed up by the harder steel of the roller cam. There is one year Mustang that had a vac advance dizzy with the roller cam (1985 MANUAL TRANS ONLY). Since it has done 30,000kms I can assume they got the proper flywheel and dizzy.
