Question Driveshaft angle problem.

Hey, My buddy has a 1979 Ford F250 with 8" lift on 38" tires. His rear Driveshaft recently dropped out. We're not 100% sure why yet but i thought maybe it has something to do with the angle being too extreme and stressing out a U-Joint. What do you guys think?

And if that is the case how should we go about fixing it and making the angle less extreme?

Degreed shims under springs to help with the angle. With that much lift I imagine you need to lengthen driveshaft.

I hear its a lot cheaper to shorten them then it is to lengthen them so if you could find a longer one cheap at the junkyard and then have it shortened it could save you some $$ because at the ez pull here they are only $10

There used to be a place that sold 1 ton CV axles for trucks like severely lifted broncos. I think they could do 28* of angle without issue. ((in googling; High Angle Drivline-Call Jesse at 530-877-2875 ))

hope that this helps you.

find a front cv shaft from a 2000 ish ford superduty and use it. The slip yokes are 1410 ujoints and 1350 cv joints. Make sure its a 1350 joint cv as they are much stronger. Alot of people dont do driveshafts properly. Dont just rotate a regular driveshaft up it will probably just throw the joints out of phase. Dont know what I'm talking about read this when I post half ways down the page

want more read this article I learnt all my knowledge from then you'll know what works and what doesnt!

How much would this cost roughly? And compared to getting the front CV shaft off a superduty?

My new cv alone cost me about $300. A superduty shaft can be bought for maybe $50-150. I just realized his truck is a 79 so it will have a married t case and have a longer rear shaft. The angle shouldn't be all that bad. Put an angle finder on the shaft and tell me what it runs at. Use a finder with the needle that floats vertical on a protractor that's the first step to us helping you and maybe take a pic. Its hard to go off nothing

O and the superduty shaft might be too short because your rear driveshaft is pretty long. The cv can be cut out and put in a longer shaft and 1410 yoke used as well.
Your probably looking at 3-400$ at a driveshaft shop and parts

I just noticed that some 79s (Like my friends) have round headlights while others have square? When did they change the lights? Mid year?

Get the angle on driveshaft that's the important part.

I'm pretty sure 78 was round lights square bezel then 79 was square lights fir sure.

Driveshaft doesn't seem all that long. Superduty one may work. Check to see if the tcase is divorced or married, divorced being more centered has a short 1 1/2 foot driveshaft it if you didn't know the difference.
